Gleaner K Starter

Hey guys, have a very weird problem and thought you all might could help. The starter solenoid on my Gleaner K stopped working right(flat wore out), found out at the auto parts store that a rebuilt start and solenoid was $5 more than just a solenoid so I figured a new starter wouldn't hurt so I got it, the starter and solenoid was just like what was on it, same numbers stamped on the starter, hooked everything back up like the old one but now it will only start and run with the key in the cranking position, when you let the key go it dies but runs good while holding it in the cranking position, I tried another solenoid and even put it on the old starter but did the same thing, funny thing is everything worked perfect on the old starter and solenoid (till it went bad), I'm thinking the key switch doesn't like the new starter and solenoid?? The parts guy was stumped as I am

Chevy engine?

How many wires are on each of the two small terminal studs on the solenoid? (The ones marked "S" and "R".)

You messed up what is supposed to be connected to the "R" (ballast Resistor starting bypass) terminal. Or your ignition ballast resistor randomly chose this time to fail!)

yes its the chevy gas engine. I have one wire on each of the terminals, the way it was and the way I put it back was the wire coming off the + side of the coil went to "S" and a wire coming out of the harness went to "R"

double chek the wires as Bob advised , could be the key switch gone bad ,, stranger things have happened .

you not getting current to the coil from the ign switch, either from a bad switch or the wire from the switch to the resistor or coil, when the starter is activated the R terminal on the solenoid provides a bypass source of current to the coil, as long as the starter solenoid is activated the engine will run, but time it releases the engine will shut off.

The big battery wires on the starter solenoid are in the wrong place.

Check this... I made this picture for another YT member who put the wires on the wrong post.

Hey John, I was wrong what I put on here a few days ago, the wire coming off the + side of the coil is on the R terminal, the battery cable and a wire on the left hand side of the circuit breaker is going to the big post on the solenoid, and a switch wire going to the S terminal, I tried swapping the R and S wires but it wouldn't crank at all when I did that. Everything is put back just like it came off the old starter, still need to check the switch
