95 gas to diesel conversion

what diesel engines will bolt up to replace a 303 gas engine in a 95 corn special? Im looking at one but want to know what i would need to find for an engine to convert it to diesel. I want to keep it as stock looking as possible. Thanks in advance.

I would think it would be just as much work to install the 303 diesel as it would be for the 329/359 and the latter two are far far better. You'll have to swap some parts over from your gas engine to your diesel and fabricate a few things. A throttle mechanism will have to be adapted and the air cleaner tubing will need some attention/crafting.

We did a similar swap by installing a 219 diesel in a late 45 combine to replace the 180 gas. The 329 is the same family as my 219. The parts I had to swap included the water pump, alternator, flywheel and the long front crank pulley for the unload auger drive.

I will say that a 359 is a better engine than the 329. You should be able to find one in a 4420 combine. The 359 offers more power and torque, much better throttle response and much improved cold starting over the 329. The 359's are good little engines.

I almost forgot about the exhaust. I'm not sure you'll be able to find an exhaust manifold that will offer output at the exact place of the 303 gas. You may have to use a custom exhaust. We did have to bend some pipe for the exhaust on the 45 and used a stanley tractor muffler bolted to the rear of the grain tank.

You said you wanted to keep a stock appearance. The muffler is about the only thing that would clue someone in that our 45 wasnt a factory diesel.

Here is a video. It all fits under the hood nicely.

I am in the middle of the same project. I am using a 329 out of a 4400 combine. The only issue so far was removing the old tach drive from the camshaft. We did it but not fun. It is going to take some parts swapping but not to bad so far. I will post more in the coming months but right now bean planting and getting chopper and wagons ready for first cutting hay take up my time. Tom
