Dearborn Woods Bros. combine 16-23

I was given this combine last fall. It looks as though it has sat most of the time, and i'm going to try and get it working again. It has a Ford 8N engine, which i thought would be the first place to start. So far, i had the mag rebuilt, got a new carb, changed radiator hoses, oil, and ran diesel through the top, followed by 30 weight to bring the compression back up, i got 70, 70, 70, 100#. Thanks to some of the posters here, i was able to time it using the "balloon method", but so far, all i can do is run it on either. I have egged out the hole for the hand crank, and i'm pretty sore from all this cranking.

I was thinking about putting a ring gear, and starter on it, i know that wouldn't be stock, but i'd like to use this thing some day because i only have 10 acres, and it'd be nice to grow some oats or something besides hay. I also would like to find the original hand crank to lift the header, someone replaced it with a cylinder, which is shot.
Here's a link to my first U-tube vid. on it.

Any comments, suggestions etc. would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

A really neat project. Would it possibly be
cheaper and easier to maintain to put a right
angle gearbox in place of the engine? You would
only need to worry about keeping the tractor going
and maintained that way. You could also then set
aside that ford motor and work on it without
crawling all over the combine. (would also make a
neat belt power unit then.)

Thanks Connor, yeah, i did think about that, but i think that'd be a little out of my league, and i'm not sure what the gear ratios would have to be. But, if i found another machine somewhere that had the PTO drive (some had them), then i'd be in business. I'm so close to getting this thing to run, it's just teasing me now.

I'm going to be doing a lot of crawling all over this thing when i get this motor going :) Everything else looks good, it's just been sitting, which means i got all this brown lock tight on everything, so i'll be going to the hardware store for nuts n bolts too. I think though, if i take my time, and think first, i might do alright.
Thanks for the comment.

Post over on the Ford N section of this forum if you haven't already. I bet they would get a kick out of your combine and have some pointers.
