Finally got the Gleaner E going

I bought a Gleaner E about 6 or 7 years ago and had it running then to get it loaded and parked in the shed. I had a temporary gas jug set up to gravity feed the carb. After it was parked in the shed it has since just sat. The 10' header has sat outside and needs to be totally rebuilt.
Well, I took the gas tank off and cleaned it out then remounted it & hooked up the gas line. I sanded the points, primed the pump and hit the starter and the old 226 cu.in. came to life. I ran it about 15 minutes before shutting it off and it purred like a kitten.
One drawback was, after I shut it off, I noticed smoke boiling off the separator clutch and had to get that cooled off so it didn't cause a fire. I will have to tear into that and see what's the problem.
But at least the old girl runs and this spring I can drive it to the shop and start working on getting it back into useable condition for cutting clover and fescue seed.

I have a Gleaner E that sat since 1994 and in 2001 got it running and drove it around and sold it on a auction for about $100.00. It must have not been worth hauling as the scrap man left it behind and never came back for it. A couple years ago I got it running, replaced some hydralic hoses, radiator filled and moved it out of the building it was in and was just about to attemp a 10 mile drive and it quit and haven't been able to start(well not in cold weather) it since. We ended up towing it and kind of let it sit since then.
Since it ran fine when it was running I suspect the fuel pump. It must have been a sign that I still have it so when it does ever warm up maybe a complete tune up and a few repairs maybe it will see a new life. $100.00 sell price was kind of an insult and I'm glad to still have it.

We had a Gleaner E at our farm that was a real cherry! It never sat outside, excellent upkeep, Full Vision cab, total gem. My late father about 15 years ago told me "We better sell this for anything we can get or we will be paying someone to cut it up for scrap"!!! He sold it for $500. What a damn shame because I have never seen one that nice since. Ryan

Seperator clutch probably needs adjustment is all. If you have a manual, they are easily adjustable. Did you have it engaged before you noticed it smoking?

Sometimes they get rust, dirt, mouse turds, etc. in them and stick, so a good disassembly and cleaning might be in order before adjusting.

I believe it is stuck together from sitting so long. Hopefully when warmer weather gets here, I get back at it and get it corrected. Thanks for the input!
