My dad was a Kansas farm boy and worked in the late 40s and early 50s for custom wheat cutters. I have some old photos of combines and I think he may have worked for Delmont Jones as well. Is there anyone in these forums who remember him, maybe. His name was John Pepper but he went by Wes. Thanks!

Sorry I can't help but one Kansas crew that used to cut for us was Tupper harvesting. He started back in the 60s on a crew and eventually ran his own operation. Our farm used to be the last one on the run. He would load everything up in our yard and head back to Kansas. Ran Gleaners starting with the Gs all the way up to the N series. Went broke over Gleaners and started up again with Masseys until switching to JD. Still makes the run today.

Pepper today is your lucky day. My grandpa was R.W. Jones which was Delmont Jones older brother. I also keep the family history at least my side of the family and have many harvest photo's. If you provide a photo of your grandpa I will look and see if I can locate him in the photo's I have. You can also search this site under Masseypride author and see most of them as I have posted them over the years. I attaching a few just to give you and idea. In the top photo standing on the far right side of the photo's is Delmont next to him in the Massey Harris issued White jacket is my grandpa R.W. Jones. e-mail if you would like [email protected]

Where were the Jones' from?
Great pics. Reminds me of the old Massey my uncle George used back in the 50's and 60's. He farmed more land than we did and Dad helped him cut wheat occasionally. Dad had a 1950 "55" JD combine which we used until the late 60's. Central Kansas.

My dad, Wes Pepper, is on the far right with his hands on his hips. He graduated from Barnard HS in 1950 and he worked for custom wheat cutters before and after he graduated from HS. So this photo would be from about 1948-1952 or 53.

My Uncle Duane Pepper who grew up in Barnard, Kansas says:
Delmont Jones lived just south of Barnard (about 1-1/2mile) he had 2 brothers that also did custom cutting, they had contacts in Texas so when they were told the wheat was all most ready they would load up all of there combines and head for Texas. They would cut wheat from Texas to Canada as the wheat ripened.

Please help me identify this custom wheat cutting crew. These are my dad's photos. John Wesley Keith Pepper "Wes" from Barnard, Lincoln County, Kansas. (1932-2014). Most likely they are from Delmont Jone's crew.

Pepper,

My family usually wrote the names of the guys on the back of the photo's. I will check I do not recognize you dad I'm sorry. But they often stayed in the same towns along the harvest run or harvested together on bigger jobs so I will look for more photo's. I have hundreds so be patient as I look thru them. That looks like Larry Jones on the Delmont son on the Left of Delmont in the middle.

I had my own crew for 7 years out on the plains and I never met a finer man then Forest Tupper, truly a great man. I sure miss those days.

I live about 20 miles South of Barnard. I never knew Delmont but I know of a Dean Jones who used to Custom Cut from just a little farther South in Lincoln Ks. I would assume relation. Dean cut wheat for my Dad for a few years and did a great job. He was also used Massey Combines. Bob
