Do swathers....

...have interchangeable heads like a combine? I found what was listed as a swather but, from the description it is a self propelled haybine. Auger, crimping rolls, etc.

Guess what I am wondering is, are they multi taskers or pretty much dedicated to one task?

My ih 4000 has a draper header and a crimper that goes behind the header and between the wheels . i think the 5000's had a simular set up but they could be ordered with a double auger or a draper header the 35 owatonnas also had a removable crimper set up .

Dave, most are just one or the other, not interchangeable, but my BIL got an older Hesston a few years ago that came with the hay head, and also a 20 foot grain (draper) head. He never used the draper head, just the hay head. Rest of the unit was nothing but trouble, bearings, belts, hydraulic problems, but it was an older machine, and he is a hammer mechanic.

Appreciate the input. Guess that is a plus for the IH machine. I do cut whatever hay I can find and where this machine is going I do not have a mower conditioner. I could cut unconditioned hay, done it before, but the horsey folk prefer it conditioned.

Yes. Some JD swathers back in the 60s through 80s were interchangeable between hay headers and draper headers. IH 4000s could have a hay header or draper too.

OMG!!! Owatonna swathers had the worst reputation of any machine out there..We called em the "Idontwanna"

if you could find an old pull type conditioner you could go behind the windrower it just means an extra trip. also tedding would spread the windrow out helping it dry faster .

Dave, I know of a 400 Versatile for sale with a 16ft draper head. It hasn't been used in a couple of years but the guys swears it is ready to go cut. $700 will buy it. Located near Kimball SD, so getting it home could pose quit a challenge.

Many years ago I knew a guy that had a Hesston hydra-swing haybine that he used to take the rollers out to swath his oats. He was an older fellow and he did it himself, so maybe it wasn't that big of a job? I don't remember the model of it, but I do remember it had the short rollers in it. Meaning they didn't go the whole width of the machine. Could be an option and then put them back in to cut hay.

Do you deliver? I have bought things from far away and had them trucked. If you want to go check it out and see will it start and runs good. I would look into a trucker. No way anyone is getting me to drive to SD! Not in January!

Most were draper heads with a conditioner behind that you used for hay then you removed the conditioner for grain or seed.

Seems to be a regional thing. Canada and west and north of here I see a lot of drapers for sale. Every time I find one in my neck of the woods it is pretty much a dedicated haybine.

We had an 830 JD swather with 12' single auger header with a 6 batt finger reel. We swathed clover for seed, grass seed and peppermint. Added filler strips and the conditioner to cut hay and silage. Slant 6 Chrysler motor....James

Dave Some of the machines have a set of crimping rolls that you can remove as an assembly for when you windrow oats or wheat. Hesston is very common brand around here of the newer machines.

There where quite a few MF draper machines here years ago. They drove with two levers.

Dave, I have a pretty nice 655 MF of my brother in laws for sale here, 12' draper head pick-up reel and hydrostatic drive Chrysler engine,, freight would be the killer even if you haul it yourself
