Havest is finally over!

The corn was ready a month and a half ago but we weren't. We had to fight the fuel system on this old John Deere 45. It worked fine before but one day it just wouldn't start. After having the carburetor rebuilt, which getting to isn't easy on these machines, replacing the mechanical fuel pump with an electric one and putting good gas in, it runs very well.

Always a good feeling to finish harvest, no matter the problems, yields, etc. It's just good to get the job done.

I think that is a very nice picture. Gee the colors are grand
Thanks for posting

Looks like a nice machine. Wouldn't mind taking it for a spin on corn I owned...you don't want me on your corn yet. From the field and the angle of the sun I would have to say you are just about wrapping up a day. Only done it once and it was a great feeling. Better than hay because you plant it and tend it more than a perennial crop like hay. Won't be long and it starts all over again.

If it wasn't for the red truck in the background, that photo would be timeless! Excellent photo!

Your photo reminds me of my farm in a way. Every piece of farm equipment I have, has tree branch scratch marks all over it from tree lines and planting right up against them. Makes it hard to dry hay but sure is nice if I have to take a break and sit in the shade.

My first combine was a Deere 45 with no cab. I bought it the year I got out of school(1989) and did enough custom work to pay for it the first fall.I put a cab on it the second fall.It was lost in a barn fire in the summer of 1994 and I bought a second one for $1000 with an aftermarket cab like yours. When cutting beans I could not see the cutterbar as well so I changed it over to a factory Deere cab. In 2005 I bought my first 95 and now have a 55,two 95's and a 105.Nice pic thanks for posting Tom

Wonderful photo John, thanks for sharing! I ran two different 45's over twenty five years in fields very similar to yours. Both were EB's. The first was 1964 square back with flat belt drive. The second a 1969 model with the 180 cid motor and v-belt drive. Always ran a 313 corn head or a 10 grain head with a Love FCB. Many folks say spike cylinder combine's can only run beans. But I found these machines did a fine job in corn, wheat, oats and beans. It's all in the setup and listening to the combine. Wasn't the fastest at harvesting, but always got the job done reliably.
Replaced the 45 a year ago with a 4420. The harvest goes faster now and changing the heads only takes a few minutes. Time, I'm learning as I get older, is a precious commodity.

Thanks everybody, it was interesting reading your stories with similar machines. After ordering manuals for what year I think this machine is based off of serial numbers I think I have a pieced together combine from a few different years, but it does a fine job so I can't argue. It is great feeling finishing harvest! On to next year to plant beans. It was a struggle changing from the bean head to the corn head earlier this year, time to start thinking about changing it back over. Chains and a tractor helped with that.

I really enjoy the pictures, this type of post is what motivates me to check this forum every day. Seeing the photos of the old machines in operation today is impressive, my hat is off to you and all the folks that continue a tradition of hard work, getting your hands dirty and bringing life back into these machines. Thanks for sharing.

Cutting a big square hole in the back of the grain tank makes working on the carb MUCH easier. A plate bolted over the hole buttons it back up. It's one of those things Deere should have done when the combine was manufactured.

Deere actually did this on the later 45's. I have a late '68 model and it has the factory door in the grain tank. One of those "why did they wait so long?" deals. Mike

Fireman,I replaced my ('65)45 3 years ago with a (same year) 95.The difference is amazeing!!Love that 95!!!
