putting a 10 ' K2 head on an F2

In order to pick up windrows of peas to thrash this past fall, I borrowed a cut-down 8' head with a 7' Sund pickup attachment. I liked the narrowness of it. I have a 9' Sund that I need to mount for the coming season. I would like to have the variable reel speed setup that is on the F2 heads, so that I can change the pickup attachment speed as I change ground speed. If I ran across another 10' pickup head for the F2, I would have to add the variable reel setup.

So, what modifications would have to be made to put a 10' K2 head on an F2?

I assume 1) moving out upper hooks, 2) making opening wider and moving out the side pieces with lower hooks (and lining them up correctly), 3) moving the brace piece with the header drive shift bearing and shortening the shaft.

You pretty well summed it up...I have a 10 foot pickup head on an F2 that likely came from a K. It"s been modified like you say. Bought it on an auction and it works fine.

I assume that is a black auger on the head, in order to get the variable reel speed setup. How difficult are those K heads to find?

For what it's worth- what I recall- There were some 10' heads on E's around here. I don't remember seeing any after that era.
Seems to me there were hyd. driven variable reel speed drives on orange heads as well.

I had a K, not a k2 with orange 12 foot regular head, orange reel and auger and it had variable drive. I don't know what that means in the grand scheme of things...

My literature shows 10 foot headers were available on both K and K2, but I would imagine they were purchased for pickup units only. One surprise- they talk about beefed-up finals on the K2, so it was able to handle a 4 row corn head. I"ve never seen that setup.

Yes, it was a kit. Seems like it included some heavy threaded rods and turnbuckles to truss up the axle area. There was one around here. Kind of ridiculous when the F2 was so much more appropriate.

Lots of hume reel 10 foot heads around here. That thing was a monster when all the neighbors were running the all crop 60's and 66's.

There were a lot of 10' direct cut heads on K series combines in the east. My K2 has the axle truss in it. I didn't get a cornhead with it when I bought it, so don't know if it ever actually pushed a 4-row or not. I think the idea for that was someone who grew relatively low-yielding dryland corn could put a 4-row head on the K2 and cover ground faster without the expense of a bigger combine.
