CIH 1660 - Let's take a step back

Getting pretty hairy down there on that last post. I have a couple things I want to put out there to maybe settle some folks dust a little.

First, for those who don't know me, I run a full time CPA practice here locally...25 years last month. I am the manager and sole shareholder. Keeps me pretty busy. In addition, I have this small farming operation. When I seem hesitant about such questions as oil changes, it can be because I did not do it. Simple things like that are delegated to others. All maintenance has been/was done on the engine. I have verified this with my help and the PO. No one likes to be called negligent. It did not happen. Quite the opposite.

Second, I get the impression that a few folks think I am fighting their positions on what is wrong with the engine. I am not. When I come back at you with a response it is to clarify your point. I do this because (1) I don't know you or your background and (2) I need to make sure the point is valid before I pay hundreds of dollars to a service guy. If I seem to be challenging your position, it is to get more details. I am not saying you are wrong.

Lastly, I am really grateful for all the help and don't want anyone to think otherwise. I basically have one business with few assets and great cash flow and another with tons of assets but only a small positive cash flow. I can't just throw money at an idea without getting a lot of confirmation. Hope this clarifies things! Have a very Merry Christmas guys, and thanks again!

Dave

For about 30 bucks you could know whats in your oil and what isn't making diagnosis a lot cheaper and easier .

Dave, I always watch for your posts because I also have a 1660. I am always trying to learn from others' problems and solutions. I would like to thank YOU for consistently posting the outcomes of your situations.

That is how we all learn to avoid or be prepared for similar situations.

Merry Christmas.

I didn't comment before because there are a multitude of thing that could cause the problem that you have, that would be hard to diagnose from a distance. You might make a list of the suggestions to use as a checklist when whoever works on the engine.

Other than that, good luck and hope the problem proves to be somewhat minor.

did it lose oil pressure,if not refill the engine with oil and see how much it takes, there could have been enough oil left to have prevented damage even though the dipstick didn't touch it,as for the drain pipe it could be a blockage, try restarting it and check the oil pressure, exhaust smoke and crankcase vent,if ok check the locations mentioned before hand by others for a leaks starting with the turbo,we had a 466E at work to stall while running a mounted unit at idle with the outriggers down won't go into all the details but it took 4 1/2 gal. to refill it,and a lot of tries and nearly a can of ether to get the high pressure oil and injector system primed up to get it running, this engine has used oil for several years but ran fine no oil smoke or major leaks but during trying to figure out what had shut it down mechanic noticed the fuel had a black tint the high pressure oil system was leaking into the fuel galley that didn't cause the major oil loss but was repaired and the engine hasn't give any trouble since this happened,i've seen several loose oil and never have any problems afterwards but not always

Dave, I have enjoined reading the progress, and ups and downs of your combine experience. I too have a business that funds my farming operation. I own a diesel repair business and a small pump shop. I think I live a little north of you, but not that far. I am in Mason county. I have made my living as a diesel wrench for 33 years. Started my own shop in 89. I would be glad to come down and look at your machine at no charge just to help you get to the bottom of the problem. The Lord has blessed me with the talent and ability to make what I do look easy. I would be glad to help you out. Good luck,,, God bless. Al Baker 231/757/0064

It's always just amazed me how i can look at an engine and not have a clue or the wrong one even trying to reason my way thru itThen her comes a guy who can tinker 5 minutes and it's running like a top! Gotta hate a guy like that!!! J/K i can fis simple stuff but envy those guys who can diagnose something better than any damn dr.!!I like messing with the stuff and hope to over haul my 4 allis . But i got to respect these guys who can practically overhaull one in their sleep! I remember frantically running to get my small engine mechanic to fix my elevator motor during corn picking. You know, damn thing ran so much better with gas in the tank!!! lmao=)
:D

lol. Why on Earth do you keep mentioning your cash flow? At your current operating level, I find it pretty hard to believe you are positively cash flowing the ownership and operating of the combine. You're doing it because you want to and you enjoy it, and that's great. Leave it at that, you're only fooling yourself if you believe it makes sense financially.

Dave, I am not making fun of you by stating negligence on your part based on what you have written. You stated that you and your "help" neglected to check the engine coolant. You stated that you and your help neglected to properly check the engine oil level. That is negligence and I am pointing it out to you because it is likely an important part of the cause for the problems you have had recently. Check the pride please, and consider that I am genuinely trying to help you out.
