20 ft head on JD 6620

I have a 16 foot head on my 6620 right now and was wondering if the 6620 would handle a 20 ft head in 50-60 bu beans or good wheat?? Just toying with the idea of maybe upgrading some.

I have seen 6620's with the 20 footer. They have block off plates to delete the auger fingers, for the outer most fingers.

Looks mighty heavy swinging all that metal out front!

Yes. No problem. A 20 foot head in beans will force you to slow down and do a better job of cutting them off.

Yes it will work. My brother runs a 220 flex on a 6600 so it will work on a 6620. We upgraded the 6600 to an accumulator instead of the float springs.

You will do fine just get your table auger set correctly like John talked about below.

You will need to remove and block 3-4 finger holes on each side of the table auger. You want it to be narrower than your combines feeder house. Then if you really want to do it correctly you will extend the auger fighting in to that new narrower width. When the JD 220s came new they had a section of fighting that was made to cut off to match the throat opening of which combine it was going to be ran on. It is shown in the setup manual. If you have a red dealer operators manual it will talk about it too.

Thanks for all the replies guys! Will a 920 work as well or just a 220? If i remember right either will work, right?

I think you need an adapter for the Dial-A-Matic plug. I can't remember exactly but I think one has 15 pins and the other has 9?

This old Case 1660 of mine handles a 220 JD flex just fine. 6620 should also.

Does your 6620 have Dial-A-Matic (round connector) or header height (Tee looking three pin connector)? My early 6620 has header height so I would have to make a conversion box to run a DAM header on mine. Later 6620s had DAM.

The DAM switches on the head are not stout enough to run the raise/lower solenoids directly for the Header Height system. I did build a conversion box using relays for my other brother to run a DAM 216 on his Header Height 6600. Basically, the DAM wiper switches controlled the relays and the relay contacts controlled the solenoid valves.

Forgot to add that the 20 ft head my brother is using, the auger was set for an 8820. We reduced the number of fingers and added some flighting. JDSeller is correct about matching the opening.

We actually bought 2 junk 220s and built one good one. If you need a chunk of RH and LH auger flighting, let me know. The auger was bent/bowed on the one junk head and I suspect that it was used on a smaller combine than what the auger was set for. My brother has $673 in the "good" head. Paid $500 for one and by the ton for the other.
