Good day to all. The subject is old combine set up. I have a mccormick 76 pull combine in good working order. My question is it seems that the settings are different than the manual calls for. Cylinder clearance in particular. Please post your experiences with old machines and new hybrid seeds. I understand there are a lot of variables please let me know what you have experienced.

the setting the books have are basically are just a starting point, I adjust from there, I look at the straw coming out and then determine what if any changes the cylinder adjustment may be needed, then after that I check tailings and see what is going through , and adjust for that, then move to the bin and adjust from there, always works for me

As CaseNutty says, the books are a starting point. You have to get off and look at straw, grain quality,throwover...to know

Nice Pics! We had an 82 when we did corn/oats/hay rotation. It did a real nice job, had the neighbor cut with a 10' swather. Book is a starting point, always fine tune for year/conditions. I also look on ground between the header and the back to see what the header misses compared to what might be coming out the back.

Get a copy of John Deere combine harvesting text book it has all kinds of info for setting up combines .
