JD 6620 rear axle - weld on shaft axle rotates on?

A few weeks ago I requested some help on repairing the rear wheel assembly on my John Deere 6620. The right rear wheel dropped into a hole and then the incident succeeded in pulling the round shaft out of the box like framing at the rear of the combine. The round shaft was factory welded into the box and the axle rotated on it. So, my question is if the shaft was welded into the box from the factory would it be OK to fit the shaft back into the box and weld it again without damage to the shaft (weaken the shaft)? Has anyone done this???? Called a junk yard today about getting the entire rear frame and the owner said they sold two of them for 6620's this week alone - $500 each. Another friend's 6620 went down last weekend. This must have been a weak spot for 6600's and 6620's. I still haven't raised the combine yet, so if there are any more good ideas about doing that it would be appreciated. Thanks.

We welded several of those axles back in the 80's at the weld shop.

I don't ever remember welding on the same one twice. So repair welding must have worked.

Weld it.

You can weld on those just fine. I know a common repair on those axles was to place a smaller pipe inside the large one to reinforce it. The axles did ok under the 00 series combines but were simply not heavy enough for the 20 series without some help. Mike

The regular axle with just he pipe pivot was too light if you have wash outs to cross. They will break. It is common to fix them like the others have posted by welding the outside pipe and then driving another smaller pipe on the inside.

If you plan on keeping the combine then a better fix is to buy the complete HEAVY duty axle for your JD 6620. It all just bolts on. You will need the complete sub frame and all. They usually run around $1000 around here. All the 4wd had them but you would need the 2wd spindle/hubs for one of them. The Titian IIs just about all had the heavy axle 2wd or 4wd.
