wide axle

I am running an 8820 TII. I have too many clean beans coming
back up the tailings elevator. Even with the sieve practically
wide open there is too much tailings. Fan seems go be ok at 750
rpm. I cannot figure this out. Grain in tank is clean. Not much
trash or unthreshed beans in tailings, mostly threshed beans.
Any ideas?

How big is the grain table, how thick are the beans and what's the machine ground speed. In other words are you putting more grain on the sieves than it can handle?

I would still bet that your fan speed is too high for lighter dry soybeans. I usually run my JD 6620 TII around 500-600 for soybeans.

I know what you are thinking and I thought maybe it could be that at first. However, the tailings gets active at the first bit of material that passes over the sieve. I dont think it is that. Also if it was that I would expect more trash in the tailings along with the beans. It is mostly threshed beans like they are not falling through the sieve. ????

If your chaffer is set too tight the beans will get carried too far back and by the time they fall through to the sieve they often go into the return. Your fan speed isn't far off (possibly is low) but I would guess your chaffer is too close. Open it up and see how that works. Unless your beans are tremendously light the fan speed you are running would be a minimum. Mike

Mike, I like your idea! I will try that adjustment this afternoon. You may get the THRESHERMAN'S AWARD for the week. Thanks alot.

Glad to help.

A common misconception folks seem to have on setting their top screens is to have a small opening to filter out as much trash as possible. While this is necessary in certain conditions as a rule many set the top screen too tight. Then they complain of getting trash in their sample and seemingly blow grain out the back. What is most often needed is a wider opening and MORE air. You are after VOLUME, not pressure for your air. Think of it like your thumb on a garden hose. Too tight and the air drifts to the rear of the chaffer with high pressure but low volume. You get trash in the tank and grain that gets carried out the back or bounces out because of the small opening. Open the chaffer, turn UP your air, and it will help immensely. Most people run too little air. Chaff needs to be floating off the chaffer REGARDLESS of what the book says. Mike

I run a 4400 or tried to run it but didn't succeed much thanks to crappy weather. I am going to print this discussion and put it in my combine manual for next year. Thanks Mike!
