IH 863 rollers (2)

Had some time this afternoon after work to pull one of the stalk rollers on the corn head that has "play" in it. That is, I can grab a knife and move the roller by hand an inch each way. Neither the roller or the coupler appear to be worn out. It is not a square drive. I don't know what to call it but their are teeth on the male coupler that mate to the roller. Looked fine so I put a wrench on the coupler and there is play at that point so I am thinking their is a problem in that particular gear box. That is about as far as I can go right now, I think. If I start opening up boxes I will never get on the field. So I guess the far right row is going to be less efficient than the others. It is the only one with substantial play. A couple others have a little bit of play and the rest are tight.

I can tell you up front that I am not going to find the time to take any pictures. Your response was short and I am not sure of it's purpose but I will give you the benefit of the doubt and try to clarify.

I understood this was supposed to be a square drive. It is not. Having a hard time coming up with a description but I will tell you it does not have teeth like a traditional gear either. The drive, looked at from the end, is more or less an "x" or more of a "+" shape. So there are four "teeth" and these are squared off at the ends. When I first looked at it yesterday, it appeared to me that the teeth were beveled but I think that this is actually wear. I would be interested to know if this is different than what others with the same head are finding. It snowed here today so I am working inside but the next couple days I am going to pull one of the rollers that does NOT have play in it so that I can compare the drives.

It's not 1000 words...but it will have to suffice for a picture.

They may be aftermarket parts. IH was always square. Kinda hard to get parts for now. I wonder how many rows are like that.

I'll check one other and see. I was a little puzzled when it came out like that. I was at the dealership today. Should have seen what was available in the way of parts. I rarely buy new parts, though. Too pricey.

Google Shoup's. They make some pretty nice aftermarket parts that are really close to original. Not pricey at all, and can usually have parts delivered by UPS the next day.

I'm more familiar with a 1083 but it's probably similar to a 863. The 1083 had a hex shaft running the length of half the head and went through each gear box. That hex shaft would wear round where it went through the gear box and cause some slop. Deere heads had the same hex shaft but on a Deere the hex hole in the gear box gear would wear round and the shaft would be OK. Or was it the other way around? Anyway, one of them was a real bear to pull the shaft out of and the other was a breeze. Jim

They don't have rollers prior to the 900 series. I was going to just pull the part number off CIH lookup and Google it but the CIH parts lookup no longer has the 800 series parts on it. They were there yesterday 'cause I looked it up. Nothing earlier than 1000 series. I'll see what things look like tomorrow.
