Another IH 863 corn head question

Stalk rollers. I have all the knives changed out. Notice that on some rollers you can grab the knife and move the roller out of alignment a fair amount. Others you grab the knife and try to move the roller and it is tight and stays lined up with the matching knife on the other roller. I am thinking they should not move. Is there a way to tighten or do I have a more serious issue?

The stalk roll couplers and/or driveshafts are worn. You have to take the roll off to see which it is. The driveshafts are square where the couplers slide on. The shoulders wear on the shaft and inside the coupler. Sometimes a new coupler will fix it, sometimes not. You may need to build up the shafts or replace them.

Don't know why I did not think of this before, but I looked at the CIH parts web page for this item. I can see what you are talking about. Not rocket science there! Guess this thing is starting to wear me down. Pressure from the looming harvest, pressure from the weather, pressure from having this huge combine blocking the driveway. I need to get this done and move on. Need a break during the holidays before it all starts again next year. Thanks much!

just remember, when it is all done you will have a very nice well maintained piece of equipment. I admire the way you are going after things and getting them in good repair.

Well thanks for the compliment and I appreciate the encouragement! I can tell it is a really nice corn head. Just getting tired of working on it! I have so much stuff to do around here I don't even know where to start most days. I asked my wife last night if I was farming or having a mid life crisis? She seems pretty sure it's farming. I think the jury is still out. ;)
