Anyone have a good system for putting new knives on? Worked my way thru one pair of gatherers (8 knives) but really didn't come up with a good system to put them on, get them adjusted, etc. You have to put them on from the bottom I guess, then rotate them up to about 30-45 degrees below horizontal and adjust the gap. Just seems kind of tedious. Is there a better way or am I just stuck with this for all 48 knives?

Honestly, I some are so heavily rusted in place that it is easier to get them off with the head and combine holding them down for me. I was just looking for an easy way to adjust the spacing. Darn bolt heads are in a tight spot to tighten when in position to measure gap.

I just changed mine on my 843 head. I was replacing the deck plates as well. with them out of the way you can work on the knives from the top. much easier than from below. the old deck plates came out pretty easy. some people recommend to stand the head up to work on them.

Take the deck plates off. Makes the job much easier. But it's still a slow tedious job to adjust them to the proper clearance. Don't worry about adjusting them to book spec. Get them as close as possible without them hitting each other. Once you get to the field you will be happy you took the time to adjust them right

I'll check into those deck plates. I hate climbing under that fool thing. I have been mostly a hay guy for a long time. I am going with a philosophy that I use during hay season. "A sharp knife is most of the secret to a good day on the hayfield". Nothing worse than trying to take off a crop with worn out parts. Thanks to all for the help!
