IH 863 gatherer chains

One more thing while I am finishing up here. Some of the springs that tension the gatherer chains have been replaced over the years with longer springs. The usual 1/8" gap won't work for these. How tight should the chains be? Real taught or should they have a bit of play?

I found a broken one this fall. replaced both of them from CIH. they are longer than the old ones. the book says 1/8-1/4 gap. that to me was still to tight. so I just swagged it. I also replace the shaft for the top drive sprocket of the gathering chain. I found an after market replacement shaft that is treaded like the 9/1000 series and does away with the roll pin. the whole row unit has to come off. wasn't to bad. will do the rest next summer. this shaft was cheaper than the oem one.

I'm just wondering should the chain have a tiny bit of slop to it or should it be REALLY taught, or somewhere in between the two?

You do not want them too tight. I tried to go by
some of the other rows that have the shorter spring and adjust the new ones to the old ones as far as how much tension the chains have. too loose and stuff will get in behind the chains and slip on the sprockets ro come off the sprocket.
