1420 header wont raise Elec over hyd

Did it once yesterday, just would not raise. Called the wife and said to cme pick me up. 5 minutes later it started working, then I did a few more rounds and went home for supper. Tonight it did the same thing, after a few acres will not raise. Any ideas where to start when I go look at her in the field tomorrow? Can the Hyd valves be operated manually some how to make sure it is an electric issue and not a hyd issue? Is the hyd pressure and supply the same as the unload auger? because that works fine.

I'd check electrical first.

Connect up a test light and tie it up where you can see it, then verify power is getting to the proper valve solenoid coil, when the "lift" command is issued.

There are several ways to check for an electrical issue on those electric controlled valves.

The easiest is to have someone hold the reel lift control in one direction. Take a screw drive and hold it on the end of the stud sticking out of the coil. It should be magnetized if it has power and is working. Then try the other side of the same valve when you try the opposite direction on the reel lift. If there is not magnetization then you have an electrical issue: bad switch, bad coil or bad wire.

You can also usually switch the coils form one side to the other. This will make the switch work backwards but it should make the problem reverse itself. If it does you then know it is an electrical issue not a mechanical one.

Just guessing here. I would say you either have a bad wire going down to the coil or a bad coil that gets warm and quits working.

See if one of the coils is hotter than the other ones.

It worked this morning so I ran until it stopped working again. I do have power to the coil when the switch it depressed. The coil did seem very warm. As fas as magnetic strenth, it seemed awful weak compared to the unload auger rotate. How hard are the to take off and switch, do they just turn out with the hex head they have an a wrench, or is there more to it?

Had a problem with my JD 6620 today. I started the combine and put the thresher in gear and turned on the header control. Nothing moved on the head and I could not see any problem until I looked at the instruments and discovered that I had turned the switch off when I released the start function. Could you have a similar problem?
