Need help 920 Deere header

Just bought a well used 920 header for my 7720. Had to buy a "Tilt Header Kit" to get the guards where I wanted them. Installed all new knives & guards. Doing tall beans, they bunch in front of the auger, on each end, auger doesn't grab them, so I have to run the reel quite low, into them. I have the reel all the way back, but would like to tip the bottoms of the tines back. How do I do that? Any other suggestions on how to make the beans feed better? Thanks.

I ran a 920 and 930 for years
Leave reel down and back at all times
You will loose less if it's feeding than with reel up and not feeding

To change the angle of the pickup teeth you rotate the hydraulic drive motor mount. There are 4-5 setting. This changes the "kick" of the reel.

The mount #10 rotates on bracket #15 with bolt #16 holding it in place.

I have never seen a JD 920 that needed the header tilt kit. That kit is to flatten the later model corn heads out on the newer feeder houses as JD change the angle on the later corn headers.

You adjust the sickle tilt with the bolts on the parallel sheet linkage. You can make the slip sheets flat as pancake if you want too. (Second Picture) The adjusting bolt #12 goes into pin #10. The bolt is located on the back end of the parallel float linkage. Shorter makes the sickle angle steeper and longer flattens out the sickle angle. IF you adjust this you have to adjust the stabilizer on the top of the sickle gear case. This offsets the pull of the drive belt and changing the angle of the sickle changes the length of the linkage.

Appreciate the help. I ran the bolts (12) all the way in, & adjusted the stabilizer, but the guards still weren't where they should have been. The kit did the trick.

IF you ran the bolts all the way in then the sickle should be at an extreme angle down towards the front. The guards should only be tilted towards the front a little bit. Maybe 1/8-1/4 in the full length. IF you have the tilt more than that then it is not correct. This will cause bad feeding because the flex sheets are not as flat as they should be.

What tires are you running? If you have too small of tires on the back axle it will make the feeder house mounting plate be at the wrong angle.

Check your auger clearance. I have seen many that were set too high (even from the factory). Set the clearance to around 3/8" and you should see better feeding. Be sure the stripper is set right, too. If the beans are hanging on in front of the auger you either have the reel too high or too far forward. Also, it's possible you have too much rearward tilt on the reel teeth. The only reason to set the reel teeth other than straight up and down is if you are having to pick up flattened beans constantly. A reel with teeth set straight will still do a respectable job of picking up downed beans if it runs slightly faster than ground speed. Not "beating", either. Mike
