John Deere 105 with flat belt on cylinder

A friend bought a John Deere 105 with a flat belt cyclinder drive. I have a 105 parts machine.
Would anybody know if v-belt and flat pully would interchange?.

I have a 1966 model that had a flat belt drive for the separator that I changed years ago to V belts from another one. I think you have to have the v-belt setup from one using the same gearbox on the engine, if I remember correctly.

What engine did your 105 have? Round back 105s used a 248 with a gear reduction. Don't remember seeing that on a squareback 105 but every one around here used a 404 or 342/362.

My 105 has a 404 engine and I do not remember it having a gearbox. It is a square back.

As it has been already noted it looks like it can be done. Thing is you and your friend need to know what rpms the drive pulley on both combines operate at. 105 roundbacks used the 248 engine I think wrapped up to 3,000 rpms. But JD used a gear reduction so they could use the same size drive pulley as used on their smaller combines. I don't know what rpms that would be. And I could be mistaken but I thought squareback 105s operated at 2,200 rpms? What I am getting at is you guys need to check your combine manuals and see what rpms the drive pulleys on both combines operated at and go from there.

i had to adjust my 342 up to 2400 RPMs to get the beater speed up to where it was supposed to be. Made a whole different combine out of it. Running the machine at the right speed is very important.

Mine is a square back. It has the gearbox & had a 248 on it originally but has had a 350 chevy on it for more than 20 years.

You had rare combine. I think 248s were only used on the squarebacks for the first year or so. That's why the 404 diesel was popular on 105s at least around here. Chevy 350s must have been an easy transplant because I have ran across a round back 105 with a Chevy 350.
