Harvesting Small Grains

I was told the rotary combines do poorly harvesting small grains, e.g. oats, wheat, etc. Is this still the case? Do some models do better than others? Is this largely do to operators using too large of heads and driving to fast? Is there a recent model that is good in Oats, Wheat, Corn and Soybeans? Thanks. Paul

A rotor machine will harvest small grains just fine. IHC and New Holland have been in service for over 30 years and do well in cereal grains.

I believe they work well in small grains.

There are some aftermarket improvement parts that might make them work better in corn/beans and then worse on small grains, but from the factory they do great.

What they don't do well is give you any straw to bale. That is probably what was being said? They grind up the straw into dust, nothing left to bale......

Rotors do a great job and if they are set right it does not grind the straw. If I was going to buy another one right now it would be red and I am a green fan if that tells you anything.

They work fine in small grains. In fact they work better then conventionals in some delicate crops such as malt barley.

rotors do great in small grains, the only time they struggle compared to a conventional in small grains is when things are a little wetter than they should be, then you will know that things are a little tough... all small grins here in my corner of the Canadian prairies, and most combines here are rotors of one sort or another

Thanks guys for your comments. I was glad to hear that. I like the rotaries for their simplicity. Someday I hope to do some corn, soybeans and wheat. One harvester would be best. Thanks again. Paul
