JD 55 concave clearance

For those of you that use a 55 or 95 with a rasp cylinder in corn how much clearance do you have on the concave? I have found that the manual for mine is for a spike and the settings are usually too close. When I do oats and beans I have to just wing it but I was looking for some input for corn.

For a 45/55/95/105,Front wide open. Rear 5/8 to
3/4"If it grinds-'quarters' cobs,open a bit
more.Btw,there 2 'hangars' for the front of
concave that must be ajusted to allow the concave
to open fully. The header must be removed to do
this.On a machine that has always been in small
grain, odds are it is in the narrow position. this
'setting' will grind corn(dont ask how I know
this.If you dont have a book,you NEED one!!!!!You
can get on Ebay.If you to talk/ask questions, call.

I see that you do have a book. A book for the corn header will have more corn settings. You need that one, too. What corn head do you have?I have a 443/95. have had 334/55 and 313/45. had the books for all of them. when sold, books went with the machine.

Chester, a good rule of thumb for concave clearance is to set the front for the size of the ears. Set the rear for the size of the cobs. That will get you very close. Most times the rear will be about half of the front, or slightly looser. Too close of a setting on the rear compared to the front will cause broken cobs and leaving the grain in the cylinder area too long, causing grain damage. Mike

Thanks kindly for the responses fellas. I don't know why I didn't think to look in the book for the header. I will have the feederhouse off to make the switch. It is a 313.
