4400 jd auto header height

Hi guys,
I am new to my JD 4400 combine. I am having trouble with my auto header height control. Earlier this fall when greasing and setting up my combine everything worked fine. Now in the field the head won't automatically lower when you get it close to the ground. It does raise like it is supposed to when following the contour of the ground. But then I need to manually lower it. I cleaned the terminals, but didn't help. Can you help me trouble shoot this problem. Thanks for your help.

adjust dog chain under cab to throat set head heigh at 16" pull chain untill you hear switch then hook chain into throat that will set your auto head.

Do you think the chain will need to be shortened or lengthened? The guy who had it before me bolted the chain at both ends. How would this adjustment get off if bolted? Also it worked perfectly a month ago, what would cause the sudden change? Thanks again.

I am assuming your 4400 has not been upgraded to Dial-A-Matic. With that being said, the connector on the combine should have three wires connected to three female sockets that the flat pins/spades in the head connector plug into. The center is 12 volt power. Take a jumper wire and touch/connect the center "socket" to one of the side sockets. The head should go up or down. If the one you touched makes it raise, the other should make it lower and vise-versa.

IMPORTANT!!!! Be ready for the head to move, do not be in an area where you can be pinched/injured by the movement. Transmission in Neutral, brakes locked as the combine must be running to have hydraulics to cause the head to move.

If it moves up and down, the problem is in the head. If it does not move up/down, the problem is in the combine. The 12V supply (center socket) is not the problem as you said it does raise.

Post back with your results and we can then take it further.

If the header control will raise properly it's not the chain under the cab nor the on/off switch by the chain. Look to see if you have a bean or some dirt messing up the "down" switch on the head. Also, it's good practice to periodically spray some electrical contact cleaner on the connection at the feederhouse. To manually check the header control you can move the rod with the ball on the end that runs on the number scale. This will confirm whether it's the header microswitch that is the problem. Mike

If the bolts that lock the floor of the flex head up when doing small grain harvest were leaved in, this can cause the head to go up but not down on its own.

I'm having same issue I have 12v to lift coil and it works correctly but lower coil only hums when voltage is applied. Wonder if there is a stuck valve? Any onions?
