I need one of these...IH part 176113C1 for reference. OR, I need a viable alternative. Anyone ever have one of these go missing and need to come up with a replacement?

I used a hard chug of plastic to make the last one I needed. Works great.

I made them out of hedge or oak before than one.

Never have bought a wood block with a hole in it.

OK...I would say you guys were funny but it has already been suggested to me that I use a wood block. The thing that comes to mind though is the concept of a "chain saw"? Seems like the chain would make short work of a block of wood? Plastic does not seem much better to me. The one on the outer chain is metal so I thought the inner one should be also? I could try some good hard oak, I suppose. Likely get me thru the year at least. If y'all think wood is good, I am on board with you. Not like I am the expert here!

Hard blocks of wood are still used as a way to take slack out of chains on many machines including balers and combines and even choppers. They last a long time. No one is "funning' you.

My JD 4400 has a bunch of chain tighteners made out of wood, and my Gleaner A2 had a whole pile of them. I made a bunch for the Gleaner out of spruce because it's hard to find hardwood here and they worked, but wore out quicker than hardwood. If you can get a plastic block big enough to work that might be better. A chain saw chain has teeth on it for cutting, without the teeth it wouldn't do anything.

Yeah...I didn't actually think they were. I'm thinking though that I can stop and see what kind of oak they have at Lowes tomorrow. I can see how that can work.

on my 843 corn head I stopped worrying about that chain tightener. I did replace 2-3 one year. tried different ways to keep it tight. just kept loosing them. haven't had one on for 4 years. I have not had one issue with the chain. mine runs just fine w/o that tightener.

Well, I'm gonna give a try at keeping one on but guess based on what you are saying I won't get too worked up if it flies off. Thanks!
