Getting ready to go combining

Started up the JD 6620 today to begin my preseason check. I am even reading my JD combine manual.
It was working fine when I put it in the barn last November but I thought it would be a good idea to give it one last look-over and a good lube job before putting any heads on it.
The corn is getting close, about 3 weeks and it should be pretty dry. With low corn prices it is not good to have a big drying fee.
Will need to wait until the elevator company is ready for corn. Now they are taking soybeans and they do not like to take corn with the beans but in about 3 weeks they will take both.
I bet that the growers down south are already finishing with their harvest.

You can shell off the end and outside rows of the field if moisture not too awful high. This will let you check your combine and also increase the airflow in the corn rows. We done this many times to get the corn in the field from 21% to 17%. Your 6620 will shell fine up to 25% moisture as long as the stalks are not green. Good luck with your harvest - how many acres do you have out?

I am a small farmer with only about 100 acres in corn and I do have a few beans that I plant to rotate out of the corn and get the nitrogen.
You may call me an overworked hobby farmer.
Thanks for your advice. I will try your method to reduce the corn moisture. Thanks again.

Along with my first cousin we were overworked hobby farmers for many years. I had forty acres next to his ground. I rented ground to him and helped him farm about 500 acres total. He had a 6620 for many years then traded for a 9400. We always missed the 6620. John Deere should start building that combine again.

I'm in western NC and hope to start this week on my planting of early corn, the 114 day corn is still a ways off, probably another month on it. It stayed hot here really late this year and didn't have the crisp cool air needed to start drying the corn down good. I just got my K back together and running so it'll be nice to finally get to use it!!

I have only owned my 6620 for one year. I replaced my JD 4400 because I needed a combine with rear wheel assist because of the mud that seems to arrive here just in time for the harvest season. A lot of deep mud last year but when I finally got the bugs out of the 6620 it did the job.
Whenever you buy anything used, and combines in particular, there are always issues that the seller forgot to mention.
