How rare or plentiful are the new idea two row corn picker with a shelling bed? In my area (border belt between NC and SC) the units that pick ear corn are plentiful, but I have never seen a shelling bed. what do these units sell for?

I have a combine set up to harvest shelled corn. I only harvest about 8 to 10 acres per year for myself and a neighbor. I always have trouble with this machine.
I pick about 10 acres per year of cob corn with a two row picker. I have very little to no trouble with this unit. I have wondered about buying a new idea unit with the shelling bed and selling the combine. My thought was less motors to care for, less belts, and all around maintenance.

Dad had 3 of them over the years. He always said the combine was a step in the right direction.

However, with your limited acrerage, your thoughts on less upkeep could have a lot of merit.

As for value, I wouldn't pay any more than what would be worth with a husking bed. It may be worth less than that. After all, there are no new ear corn pickers out there, but plenty of ways to shell corn.

I think I would get a better combine before I went with a picker sheller. At one time I thought it would be a good deal, then I ran one for a friend of mine. Slow going and plugged a lot.

An acre or two ok, but if you have more than an acre or two (literally) I would stay with a combine

One less motor, belts, etc I like. Running down two rows of corn on first round with picker or husking two rows around field by hand I don't like.

I grew up on 12 acres and we opened up field by hand husking getting ready for picker. Took longer to do that than pick the rest of field with Picker.

It's your call, Bill

If I remember the 324 was the wide row unit, and the 325 was the narrow (30 in.) row. The better shelling unit was the supersheller model 329 they can be switch out on the picking unit of the machine. The newer shelling unit works good heavier the corn you may need to slow down a little. It will keep up easy in 150busl/acre corn. You can find them around here in good shape for $ 1,500.00 whole rig. When picking the back round of the field I run the snot down low and go slow does not get every thing but does fine. The corn now days genetically shells easy. I would say the pull type pickers are easier and cheaper to work on than a combine, we have both a Massey 760 and a very nice 324 New Idea. I love running the Picker.

J I had a combine and got tired of keeping it up on a remote farm we game hunt on. I got a two roe sheller and it can sit out a year and still does fine. Sure solved my problem. Have shelled some really good like 180bu corn and had no problems .

Ten years ago we charged family $30 per acre combine and transportation to elevator. Surely you have a neighbor that would shell your corn for $500.00 or less. I know what I would do!

What kind of combine do you have that gives you so much trouble ?Maybe the guys on here can help you fix it ? :D
