Needed to rebuild the variable speed feederhouse drive sheave that's leaking oil on a friends JD 7720. We can't get it apart and have looked at the exploded diagram on JD Parts and can't get the driven sheave and piston out. Don't want to force anything and break it. Anybody have an idea of what we are missing that we can't get it apart?

I just rebuilt my 6620 yesterday. You did use a half or three quarter pull handle and screwed out the center bolt in the piston right?? That is what holds it in. If that is out then tap on the piston to break it loose.

Are you saying put a 1/2" drive ratchet in the square hole in the end of the piston and screw it out of the barrel? Wondered that but wasn't sure if that's how it came apart.

Yes, thats how it comes apart. That center bolt is actually the center of the piston and the seals you will replace seal on that bolt. If scared or worn it will need replaced also. It just unscrews and then the piston comes right out.
