7700 combine setting

Need a little advice on setting a 7700 John Deere combine for oats and wheat how fast should I run the fan and how do measure the concave setting ? I have recomeneded cylinder speed and concave spacings but I don't really see where to measure spacing

Your operator's manual will have all of this information in it. If you don't have one already you really need to get one. You will need it. Mike

Right hand side by the drive tire there should be a worm gear driving a sector gear. On the sector gear is a pointer pointing at some numbers. It may also have the words soybeans and corn on it. In the cab by your right knee is the adjustment crank. I believe it will say something about open/close and 1/8 inch. Crank until you achieve the desired number as the initial setting.

Yes sir I got one coming but its not here yet so hopefully I can get it set up pretty close without it . We gota get cutting we've had 3 inches rain in two weeks and more coming . I refuse to curse the rain though so I'm hoping we can get cutting tomorrow

You can start your fan speed at 700 and adjust from there. You will probably want to run it faster, but it's a position to start. I think the concave question was answered. Good Luck.

If the oats is tough and your cylinder bars are not new, I would close the concave all the way and then open one turn at a time when you run some grain through it. You can look at the grain and straw, if it has all the hulls knocked off and straw is broken, open the concave a bit, just so you are knocking the seed out of the concave. On my 7700 this year, I had to run the concave all the way closed and my cylinder speed around 1050 to get it to knock out.

To do a good job you will need to proportion the concave to the cylinder which is explained in the book you have coming. In the mean time, odds are your oats are weedy by now so you will need to up your cylinder speed and run the concave more OPEN than normal. Normally you would run the concave very close to completely shut. In weedy oats you will want to open the concave up somewhat to allow the weeds to pass through without grinding them. Also, you will want to up the cylinder speed as well. Oats usually take around 750-800 RPM and you will likely want to go 50-100 over that, or whatever is necessary to take them through without slug feeding. For the fan you will want to run more air as well as the shoe will no doubt have more material going over it. Keep a close eye on your return elevator to monitor the shoe. Many times folks will want to squeeze down the concave in weedy conditions when often it helps to open it slightly and run the cylinder faster. You can thresh oats (which should knock out very easily by now) and not grind up the weeds you have. Mike
