Corn head for IH 615

So I bought a nice good running IH 615 combine with a 10 foot grain head, didn't have any corn head but price was right. Been trying to find a three row narrow since most guys say that it won't handle a four row. Went to Keiters and couldn't find one there. I need an 833 the combine does have the quick tach head. Any other places you recommend looking? Or would there be another head I could put on it? I thought about getting a wide and making it into a narrow but didn't know it that was possible, like turn a 844 into a 833 or an 834 into a 833, any ideas I know its an old outdated combine but it suits my farm just right and is a step up from my current combine, a pull type JD 25.

"old" and "outdated"? What language are you speaking? I am completely unfamiliar with those terms. Did you mean "affordable" and "space efficient" or "classic"?

Where are you located? I do searches for corn heads almost every day and see them around when I am looking at other equipment. If you are near me I would keep an eye out for you. I don't find a lot of 3 row heads but I do see a few 4 rows.

I was thinking the same way but every dealer or equipment guy I talk to tell me I need to update and that it is too old of a machine. I only have 15 acres of corn and wanted the combine to open up end rows and along fences, we pick most of our corn. I am located in central PA

Simple solution for you on 15 acres. Buy a four row head that is narrow and probably more common, then just pick three rows at a time or four if it handles it. Maybe would be feasible, kinda depends on how well you followed the planter markers lol and how tight you planted to the woods, fence line ect

I search Ohio regularly. If I see one east of center I will give you a yell. Most older heads like that have a combine attached to them, though. Like a boat with an an anchor.

I was thinking that but I found a few 4 row narrow heads and they want anywhere from 2500 to 5500 for them here in PA. I only paid 900 for the combine. Someone told me a four row would be too heavy for the 615.

I appreciate it. If you find any three row narrows thats what Im after. If the price is right I might consider taking the combine too.

The 615 was only equipped with either a 2 or 3 row corn head, they were built 1968-74?. The throat/feeder is the problem, width was approx. 28-30" wide. The 800 were mostly 40 (715-815) or 50" wide (915). The corn heads most common were model 228, 2 row wide, or 328, 3 row wide. I don't remember if they built the newer 800 for 615 throat width, would be called a 823/824 or 833/834 if they did. I used to set up new combines in that era but 2/3 row was done in Iowa by mid 70s.

Just an idea, There are probably more 343 (3 row narrow)John deere cornheads around, They were used on the 300 cornpicker and either the 3300,4400,4420 combines and probably some choppers. There is a place in Nebraska that makes Head adapters to put a 40 series deere ie, 343 cornheads on an 800 series International feederhouse. I think it's Harv's in Giltner,Ne but you better google it to make sure. I had a 615 back in the 70's and early 80's, it handled 13 feet of beans very well, we had the 700 series heads so I couldn't have done you any good. Our 615 had plenty of capacity for 2 rows of corn I think it would've handled 3 just fine, but lifting a 4 row cornhead would probably be hard to do.

Check richmond Indiana craigs list, was a nice 615 with heads, 3 row narrow, wanted 3 k for the outfit.

Did you try Boak Family Farm in New Castle? 724-924-2396 They might not have one but might know where one is judging by the number of older, smaller machines they sell. They also have some used Bish head adapters to put JD heads on other model combines. They might have one for an IH 615, you never know.

Sounds like a pretty good deal just wish I was closer. I like the idea of going with a JD 343 head, but they are expensive here in PA, at least the ones I have found. Any of you guys think I could take a three or four row wide and make into a 3 row narrow or would that be too much work and hassle?

I'm not sure how easy it would be to narrow a wide international cornhead but a deere would be simple except for the tinwork. A 443 deere head would be easy to narrow but probably will cost more than a 343. A 444 cornhead can be bought in the low to mid teens here but you still have to narrow the tinwork. Good Luck on what you decide to do.

Those heads show up every so often. You just have to keep an eye out for them.

I ran a 615 for a few years and I would not put a 4 row on the machine unless you are not going down the road and your ground is flat.

If your in a hurry then I think your best bet is a deere 343 and a head adaptor. I know its more money but you will find more 343 deere heads than you will 833 IH heads IMO
