Another CIH 1660 light question

I'll keep asking them and hope someone knows. Which lights are the "headlamps"? I pretty much guess that it is some combination of the four lights above the windshield but probably not the two on either side that point at the header. Do all four operate as headlamps?

In checking continuity on the harness I need to know what lamps should be getting power in each switch position. The manual tells you, but does not say which lamps are which. I am looking for HEADLAMPS. Which are these?

When I got my 1660 2 years ago I was about ready to kill myself trying to get the lights figured out. I did not want to run the battery down and did not want to run the engine all the while so I put the battery charger on and went to work with a test lite. Only to realize the engine has to be running to get power to some of the lites.

The two outer ones right above the windshield. According to the book, they are adjusted to shine farther ahead while on the road or field. The other four are flood lights for lighting the header. The book has a diagram for aiming the lights.

Appreciate that! It's a big book with a lot of fold-outs and a mediocre table of contents. I looked for just such a thing last night and could not find it. What page was that on? It might have more info I need.

5 out of the six lights on the top of the cab come on when you turn the light switch to either "road" or "field". They are never controlled independently. There is only one high beam "headlight" that is controlled by a rocker switch on your steering column. It is the only light that can be controlled independently of the other 5 lights on the cab. I believe it is the fourth one from the right when on the ground looking at the cab.

Actually running? Not just turned to battery? I don't recall if I ever tested it with the engine actually running unless I did it in Mason just before I drove it home...but I can tell you nothing worked then. With the keyed turned to battery, but not started, I can get the right headlight on...but only with the bright lite switch turned on. Some work lights come on but others no. Taillights work, not flashers. So I have some power, some lights have broken wires. Two flashers are broke right off the combine.

So help me to understand, so I don't spend the afternoon chasing gremlins. The manual says that the rocker on the steering column turns the light from bright to dim. I suspect that "dim" is the standard on position created by the on/off switch and that "bright" is exclusively controlled by the rocker switch. The light in question is the (operators) furthest right of the four lights that are mounted above the windshield. I have to assume now that the "bright" switch is a separate circuit as this is the only headlight that operates and then only when in bright setting. Since no other lights on the front come on when switched, there has to be a break in the switch circuit. Hmmmm...back I go then.

When buying manuals for a 1660, you must know the serial number because before a certain number, you use a different manual. I can only tell you that mine uses the earlier manuals. If it is an IH engine, that is news to me. The PO got it ready and checked all the fluids so that I could drive it 60 miles one memorable afternoon. It starts and runs extremely well. To make a long story short, I haven't really spent a lot of time looking at it yet. I likes to fix the broken stuff before I start breaking the working stuff. :)

So what is different? Maybe it is my description that is bad.

On my 1660 the rocker switch tuned the one light on and off. Not bright/dim. The main light switch has 3 positions. Flashers, road, and field. Flashers just turns on the flashers. Road turns on 5 lights on front of the cab and the flashers. Field turns on the grain tank light and unloading auger light and five lights on front of cab. Then the rocker switch turns off/on the sixth light on the cab in road and field position. That's the way my 1660 worked

Mine is a later one, with Cummins engine. The only switch which effects the lights on mine which is on the steering column is the turn signal switch.
There are indicator lights on the little panel under the steering wheel for the turn signals, bin full, and auger out.

Well...

I could live with that.

Manual says that light should be bright and dim but, what the hay! Manuals have been wrong before.
