john deere lo vis versus regular hy gard

You can in warmer weather but when it gets cold you would be better served with the Low-Viscosity. Regular Hy-Gard will work fine in the hydraulic system. Mike

I don't know about the 7700 but the 9500 is one picky sucker. Deere just about has an egg if you think about using anything but lo vis. Same way with grease. I burned up all of the bearings in the straw chopper in short order. They were WELL greased. Mobile mech said it was because I wasn't using their gun grease. Sure enough, switched to theirs and not another bearing on the whole machine yet. They are proud of that stuff.

Use low viscosity HY-guard in the hydro and regular HY-guard in the hydraulics.

If you want to spend the money having the Hydro repaired then use Regular HY-guard in it. It will cause swatch plates to wear quicker than the LOW viscosity it calls for. Plus you will have a very sluggish hydro in cold weather.

The JD 7700 came out with Texaco type "F" automatic transmission fluid in it. That is way thinner than regular HY-guard.

The cost of regular and low viscosity is just about the same so I would not try to skimp on the few dollars the Correct oil costs.

PS. that page you are banking on is in the "GENERAL" oil specification section. There are a few hydrostatic drives that use the regular HY-guard but not the one on a JD 7700.

If your wanting to save some money then the after market brands of hydraulic oil will work OK in the hydraulic system on the JD 7700. It is a very simple open center system without any hydraulic clutch packs in it. So about any light weight oil will work fine there. Have seen guys run 10 weight oil when they had barrels of it.

I personally do not use Hy-gard in high pressure hydraulics. Hy-gard's additives will etch copper and will etch the copper out of your swash plates and slipper shoes resulting in early failure. This is why Deere Dubuque went to 10W-30 (I think it was 10W-30) engine oil as the factory fill in the dozer hydrostatics.
I use a good quality AW32 or 46 hydraulic oil for the hydro and hydraulics.

Sundstrand manuals do recommend Anti Wear Hydraulic oils.

The 32 (or 46) is the cSt (ISO) viscosity rating of the oil at 40C temprature. ISO 32 is roughly a heavy 10W and the 46 is a light 20W.

If you have a combination system....hydraulics and transmission gears using the same oil, stay with Hy-gard as you will need the extreme pressure additives for the gears.

Use lo-vis hy-hard for the hydrostatic system and regular hy-gard in the hydraulic system. The difference is viscosity. Lo-vis is 10 weight equivalent and regular is 20 weight. When the 9000-series first came out they had 10 weight engine oil in the hydraulic/hydrostatic system. Then, Deere said we could use lo-vis hy-gard instead, but don't mix them. Then, Deere said we could mix them.
