AC 72 grain drag chain

I have been having trouble with the grain drag chain on my AC 72 breaking for that past few years. Today everything was going fine until it wasn't.

Looking at some other combines I see the grain drag chains run with the open side of the links visible from the right side of the machine. On my 72, I see the back side of links when looking at it from the right ( straw discharge side) side of the machine.

If you have an AC 60, 66, or 72, would you look at your grain drag chain and let me know which way it lays in the machine ?

Thanks

Greg

None of the illustrations in the Operator Instructions, The Parts Catalog, nor the Dealers Instructions show the chain clearly enough to tell which way it is running.

If you are talking flat steel chain, open side of link leads in the direction of travel. If you run it so the sprocket pulls on the open side, it flexes until it breaks.

I checked all my many manuals and you are correct about not seeing a clear picture Riverbend!! I can check out both of ours tomorrow and get back. Ryan

This is how my IH 76 combine shows to run chains

It"s logical to run per the illustration. Other direction would tend to close the slot by pressure on the chain. As illustrated, there is no pressure on the slot to open or close.

The chain was installed in the general orientation shown in the IH diagram, but it has the open side towards that sprockets. It has been like that so long that it has worn through the back side of the C shaped end. It sure looks wrong, but it would not be the first unique design that I have seen on this machine. That said, it works really well for what I need it to do.

That does sound like its upside down. Which would explain it breaking. More than likely your going to need an entirely different apron.
