Tachometer wiring on Gleaner K

Attempting to rewire a gleaner K that was butchered many times over the years, and there is a whole bunch of cut wires with two to three colored wires in the same curcuit. It's a mess.I am trying to make sence of the tach wiring in the manual and I am stumped.According to the manual, the feed from the engine comes from the alternator to the selector switch and on to the tach.I was always under the impression the signal came from the negitive side of the distributor.
I cannot use any of the existing wiring as most of it is not in use or is missing. The manual is downright poor and is very confusing. Can anyone give me some idea of the correct wiring curcuit?

So far as I can remember, AC used an impulse from the alternator to run the tach. on about everything(after the mechanical ones on the tractors ended) After all, it's kind of difficult to get a signal from the distributor on a diesel engine!

I can't recall the manuals enough to comment. I do know that by the series 2 Gleaners they had very complete diagrams. The whole system, then individual circuits.

I took a closer look today at the alternator curcuit. There is a large yellow wire that is part of the charging system. That wire goes from the alternator to the amp meter, and then returns to a 80 amp curcuit breaker and on to the starter and regulator. There is a 2 wire plug that is not pluged into the alternator, nor is there anywhere on the alternator to plug it.At some point the alternator must have been replaced and the new one is not equiped to run the tach.Any ideas on how to solve this issue?

I agree with your observations. If you want to run the original tach., I'm afraid you'll have to find an older alternator. Then you would have to be sure it's got the right pulley on it. They're certainly out there. But is it worth it?

Might be worth a trip to a salvage yard to get whatever sections of wiring harness you need.

Have to K's sitting in the shed. Haven't used for a couple years, but fire up to make sure they run. Not sure if My wiring is right or not, more of a fly by night. Rev up the engine and go. Never have used the one, as I am still playing with getting the wobble box to work properly.

check with Oakley combine in oxford n.c. they specialize in gleaners and will be glad to assist you

Thanks for the replys.Bob I think you are correct,is it worth it.I took a trip to the local auto parts store. For $51.00 I got a new tach that will run off the distributor.I did attempt to get a wire harness and was told by the dealer,GOOD LUCK.That harness has been obsolete for at least 20 years.
Since the control panel and all the gauges were cut out with a hacksaw,I will start from scratch front to back. That should keep me out of my wifes way for a while.

Thanks for the replys,
Patrick

If you take that alternator to a repair shop they should be able to bring a wire out of it for your tach. typically it would just hookup to one diode in the alternator. I'm sure a rebuild shop could help you. jstpa
