JD combines

In the early 70"s John Deere had the 3300, 4400, 6600, and 7700 series combines. Later on these upgraded to the 20 series, the 3300 was dropped and the 8820 was added. My question is, could someone explain the next series of upgrades......that is what did the 4420, 6620, 7720, and 8820 each upgrade to?
 
Well the 4420 was dropped and the new 4425 replaced it ( engine moved to the back like the old 95 the 4400 replaced) and the 4425 was replaced by the 4435 then it was dropped. The 6620 7720 and the 8820 were dropped for the 9400 9500 and the 9600. In the time frame of the 9400 9500 and 9600 combines the terms changed from 4 6 and 8 row machines to Class 6, 7 or 8 (and so on) machines. I still don't understand this change and terms. I am sure there is someone out there who can explain this better when I can. Hope this helps. Bandit
 
I think the 9000 series was introduced in 1989. Then came the 10 series (9610, etc.) followed by the 50 series (9650, etc.) then 60 series, 70 series and then the new numbering series which I still don't understand.
 
The 9400 is a class 4 machine, 9500 a class 5, etc. To my knowledge, capacity has little to do with what "class" a combine is. It's all about engine horsepower and grain tank capacity. That's all. Mike
 
So in theory, if you took a small combine like a Gleaner K2, put a 170 hp Cummins in it, and figured out a way to increase bin capacity to 225 bushels without crushing the running gear, you could have a Class 4/5 machine only capable of 3 rows? Interesting . . .
 
They also sped the shoe up on the Titan IIs causing them to fly apart after awhile. Many around here including ours had the slower Titan sprocket installed after the first shoe fell apart.
 
Its not hard actually. S stands for the "STS". 6 is the series and the next number is the class number. S60 is a class 7 STS combine.
 
I know, it doesn't make any sense. But that is the way it's figured now. Many combines out there have similar separator sizes but only are tweaked in the engine/grain tank/unloading rate areas. Mike
