K Gleaner grain head variable speed pulley

Do the hyd lines have to be hooked up on a grain head in order for the pulley that drives the reel to work? It is the pulley on the variable speed drive. I am trying to get a 10 foot one working that I recently got with a combine I bought. It has sat outside several years and the hyd lines are shot. I will replace them eventually but I am trying to get it going as quickly as possible before the ragweeds take over my oats! I have got everything else working but the belt on this pulley slips and the reel doesn't move. I have checked and all driven parts are free so its something with this pulley. Thanks for any help Lee

Hyd. pressure moves the one pulley assembly. The other one is spring loaded, and responds accordingly. That's how most variable speeds work. The major enemy of that system is setting out in the weather.
The whole thing should turn without the hyd. hooked up, provided the belt is tight enough.

I can't remember for sure, but it seems like maybe part of that assembly could be loosened and slid for initial tension on the belt. But that was often ignored, as you could "cheat", and "tighten" the belt with a nudge of the hyd. lever. Only thing is then the full range of speed was not available. But that full range was seldom necessary or used.

Thanks Bob, maybe I can figure it out in the morning. I have the books for the combine, the grain head and the corn head but can only find the combine book so I am thankful for the help. Thanks Lee
