JD 55 beater shaft

I have had a vibration in the old 55 with the straw chopper on for quite awhile. I have had the hammers replaced and balanced and checked everything I could think of. It finally dawned on me that maybe something was wrong in the beater shaft and the chopper was making it worse. Last night I took a bore scope and looked inside and sure enough there is crude crusted on the inside on the left end. Any suggestions on how to clean it out without tearing half of the machine apart?

Chester, unless there is a tremendous amount of crud on the beater I can't imagine it would make the vibrations you talk about as slow as it turns. I would sooner believe a bent beater shaft rather than an unbalanced one if the vibration does, indeed, come from the beater. It's also possible the main separator drive belt could have a flat spot on it somewhere. Mike

There does not appear to be any bend in the beater shaft. I never thought of the seperator drive belts. I replaced the belt back to the chopper. I just can't think of anything else that could cause the thing to shake that bad. You literally can't set in the seat with the chopper on but take it off and the machine works fine. With all new hammers I had the chopper balanced at a very reputable shop. I am lost.

Remove various belts/drives, then start the machine.

When the vibrating component is no longer turning and the vibration is not present, you will know what the offending part is!

I would start with the chopper.

Even if it was balanced at a pro shop, mistakes get made.

I have NO clue as to how that chopper is made, some had a large hollow tube with the shaft passing through it that would get YEARS of dust accumulated in it and when the crud would shift around (after a balance job) the darned thing would shake again.

I have visited with guys from two different shops, and the first thing they would do with such a rotor was to cut a hole or two in it and wash it out, then weld the holes shut, as well as any other gaps that had let the dust and debris in there in the first place, and THEN balance the rotor.
