IH 230 windrower loses power

I finally got my planetary transmissions and steering clutches put back into my windrower and now the one thing that's never given me trouble is acting up, the motor. Yesterday it was acting up so this morning I changed the oil and gave it a full tune up, points and condenser, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Yesterday I had the carb off and cleaned it and blew brake cleaner through all the passages and nothing seemed to be plugged. I checked fuel flow at the sediment bowl on the bottom of the tank at the sediment bowl on the fuel pump and at the carb and all checked out. Also blew out air filter. The thing will run good for awhile then lug down like I'm in super thick hay even if I'm not if I choke it momentarily it will build rpm again for a little while. I thought for awhile it was an issue with getting hot and about the time I'm frustrated enough to try letting it cool off it will take off and run great again. I'm wondering if I have govenor issues? When its running good and doesn't have a load on it at full throttle the governor bounces and the rpm pulses. If anyone has any ideas of what else to check or how to adjust/service the governor I'd surely appreciate it. Also curious if there is an IH 4 cyl diesel that would be similar for a swap and what sort of machine would it be found in? It will probably never happen but at least then I would know what to look for a good deal on.

Sounds like you've missed something in the fuel supply/carburetor area.

Since choking helps (even for a little) it ain't 'chur governor.

I agree with bob.. check your gas cap to see if it is venting properly.or maybe something is floating around in your tank and intermittently plugging your fuel outlet.

What do you have in it for spark plugs? To hot of a plug will cause that problem. Try putting your old ones back in and see if it cures it.

We have a 210 with the 4-cyl gas (C153 I think). It would run fine until warm, then it would sputter and chug away. Pulling the choke helped it smooth out. I fought with it for a long time before I realized the threads going into the fuel pump were worn from vibration, and it would suck air between the pump body and the elbow fitting screwed into it. A generous helping of permatex on the threads has it working for now... Good luck!

One thing that has given me trouble in the past, has been the sediment bowl strainer/petcock. With the gas cap off, and the the sediment bowl& screen removed, gas should POUR out of both sides of the strainer. If it does not run out of there really well, the engine will starve for fuel. Grass and stuff clogs the passage. Just unscrew the whole sediment assembly, and clean.

Just a thought; Best of luck!

We also have an IH 230 windrower. Does any one know what type of hydraulic fluid it takes? I know some older machines take mineral oil? The Lift worked fine, but put in new hydraulic fluid and the lift quit working! Wondering if it takes a special hydraulic fluid, or mineral oil? Thanks
