Hey guys...IH 1420?

Going to look at the 1660 again. The idea is starting to grow on me. HOWEVER, someone has dropped an IH 1420 in front of me. A brochure I have puts this machine as being in the same series as the 1460 that I already looked at. It is a well maintained machine and price is good for an axial flow. Anyone ever own one of these little guys? Going to see it today too.

I thought about going that route a few years back. Ask 1206SWMO to post pics of his. The front axles and final drives seem to be very weak. All I looked at had been or were ready to break.

I'd stick with a 1440, 1460, or 1480 because there are a lot of aftermarket companies that suppliy parts.

The 1420 was a stand alone machine that does not have much support.

Probably closer to an F3 than anything else you"ve been looking at. Like a rotary 715. May well be some thing you'll like.
Scale of your operation being smaller.

Well...You ain't half off there! With respect to the others because they have valid points and I need to follow thru on them....I really liked this combine. What an opportunity! The seller comes out, gives me his cell number and the keys and says he has to go...feel free to drive it around! So I figured out how to start it and drove it all over the place. First time I ever drove a combine...discovered it had no brakes! I have questions about it but I cut hay all day before driving across the state to check it out. Ate dinner at 10 PM and now I am headed to bed. I have questions about how to drive a hydro but tomorrow is soon enough. All the responses much appreciated!

We liked our 1420. Neighbor has it now.

That's a common complaint, at least on the 14 series. If the 1420 is in good shape and the right size for your farm it's worth considering - just keep in mind what the others have said about weak spots like the drive axle and possible difficulty in finding parts that are exclusive to the 1420 compared to the larger, more common models.

Well the thing is this. I only use old equipment and I do most all my own repairs...frequently with used parts. So I am well acquainted with the concept of what is going to happen if I take a lightweight like the 1420 into a rough headland and try to spin her around fast. And when I say "what is going to happen" I don't mean something will break. I mean I will have earned the right to lay on my back on cold cement, covered with oil and grease, beat up from the effort, for however long it takes to make it right. Not to mention the $$$$. I liked the 1420. Spent a lot of time with it. Probably go back and give it another go over. Likely if parts were breaking it was from fellas who needed a bigger machine but couldn't afford it. Not sure that is the fault of the 1420.

The 1420 has 112hp non turbo motor I think its a 436ci. A little short on power when crowded. Mine is the best starting motor on the place winter or summer. Parts have not been a problem, local IH dealer has everything I've needed in stock. As far as week axles, leave the bin extensions off and don't blast across a rough field with a full bin and no problem. Brakes? Why are there brakes on a hydro? Never needed.

That's a nice little combine. Really drives nice. I took it thru some tight spots without much worry. Looking at this one hard...it appeals to me.

OH by the way. You didn't say how much the 1420 was. As a comparison I have mine listed for $10K with a 17.5ft 1020 flex head and 2900 hours on machine.

Another road trip yesterday. 1420 is a really nice smallish machine. 1660 is a better machine obviously and I liked it better on second look but the battery had died and I could not start it. On the way between the two I scared up not one, but TWO Gleaner M2 for sale. No one around but I got the numbers. Still shopping.

1420 should have 358 german non-turbo diesel. Good motor but parts for the injector pump are nearly nonexistent.

Yes,I will have to dig out that picture....My 1420 had no bin extension,no turbo, and no Mud Hog....It must have been used where there were lots of terraces and water ways...The left side had already been repaired when I got it..

I highly suggest that 1420-1440 IH owners pull a final off and drive a beam in the front axle housing to beef it up..

It is $6000...no heads. Very clean on the outside. A lot of corn husks hanging in the guts. Drives nice, surges in low. I really liked it...but life has changed suddenly, as it so often does.

The 1420 has a D-358 engine....As for brakes a guy near me got badly hurt....He was on a black top road going up a steep hill with a 1460 and was near the top when an axle coupler stripped out..He had no brakes and went clear back down the hill and rolled it at the bottom..

That being said I farmed on level ground and never had brakes on my 1420..
