IH 1660 and IH 1460

For those who know to what I am referring, the Gleaner R52 has boldly gone where I cannot follow. Left the universe in fact. Cross that one off the list!

I am giving the IH 1660 a second look. Yes, the cab stinks to high heaven. Keeping in mind that I buy equipment routinely that has mice issues and have never smelled anything like this cab. But the seat needs to be replaced anyway and a good cleaning will eventually get rid of the rest. I can also make any repairs to the wiring the wee darlings have chewed. Don't WANT to spend the rest of my summer on it but if I have to I can. Then there is the dripping oil, the tape, jbweld and other repairs. But I guess I will go back and see if it runs and what it sounds like. The only other options still in the market are the two 1460....4wd model with no obvious issues except the sheet metal is beat up and the 2wd that looks real nice but needs the header lift cylinders rebuilt or replaced. Heavy leak there. The 1660 bothers me because I cannot find any heads for sale and most of the combines I find do not have them included. I have to make a decision today on the 1460's. Right now I am thinking I may pass up the lot. See what comes up next month. Getting discouraged.

Odo-Ban will work well on the rodent smell. Available at Home Depot, Sam's Club and maybe other stores in your area. Comes as a concentrat, just mix with water as directed and spray. Has a mild, pleasant odor that will not drive you out of the cab later.

Dave,
I assume these are auction combines? I know you had said the F3 was high priced, but I bet the 1660 sells for more than the F3, and a good Case head will be expensive too. The 14's probably cheaper than the F3, but again I'd bet by the time you add a flex head and corn head they are just as expensive. If the F3 is anywhere close to the budget, I think I would at least take a look.

Here is the deal. I don't want anyone to think these posts are about soliciting sellers. They aren't but that doesn't mean it won't happen. If you are not on modern view, switch to it. Follow the link to my email and send me a note. I have shipped tractors from farther than you are.

Dave, if you seriously looking at the IH combine, if you are not familiar with the rotor set up you may want to take someone that is to look at it. these are great combines but if rocks had ever entered it is very costly to repair. I would not rule out the F3 but I do like the IH units just pretty costly to get it set up with heads.

I am going to let the 1460's go by. Good running units but there is an issue with the seller I would rather not go into. I don't want to go back to that place.

The F-3 was pulled off the market.

I am returning to look at the 1660 tomorrow. Will have someone run it and put it thru it's paces. I would need a corn head to go with this and I don't see a bunch for sale. Anyone got an idea what those go for?

Sadly, the F3 was taken off the market. It often happens when I go after high priced equipment that I make an offer and the guy has someone in the wings who was sitting the fence. He cuts his price but not to my level...and off it goes.

If I had my first choice...F3 would be it. Just not seeing a lot of them for sale. Of course there was the one that sold for $4800 with two heads 5 miles from my house in February. Bitterly regretting that one now. Realistically though, it was snowing every day and I have a one lane drive with clients coming in all day every day at that time of year. I could not get it home and I had nowhere to put it. Farm is 20 miles further out and the road was nearly impassable. So I did not have a choice. But I still would like a Gleaner F3. I just like them. M3 is good too. L3....oh yeah.

Are combine cabs modular, like modern tractor cabs? If they are, can an entire cab and operator's station be easily swapped out?

Dave H find out when the transition cone was replaced and if it hasn't check for holes in the bottom. The cone and the cage are about the worst thing to change and most time consuming.Make sure you check the shaker bushings if they are run to long with them being out will bust seive rails and you can't see that from the outside. But don't get me wrong I wouldn't run anything but a red rotary and have had others as well.

1460's are both gone. Going to look at the 1660 one more time tomorrow. If you give me a punchlist I will check it out. But I need details because I don't know what half the stuff is by name.

Well everything attaches somewhere. I think in this case we are talking about just needing the seat gone, replace the plastic on the top of the console and clean the be-jesu out of it.

dave : a lot of the guys here know more than me on some of the details of the combines,i have had 2-1680's the 1st one burned but it tosed a rod out the side of the block and hit the fuel filter system and started the fire. my 1st one had a lot of damage from mice, on the right side of the cab there is a panel that exposes the controls were all the wireing is and also the harnness that goes to the back of the combine. take a good look there the see how bad it is. also on the top of the cab open up the ac panel as they can get from the bottom to the top on the back post of the cab. i have saved anything that was worth saving out of my old one, rotor and stuff will not inetrchange but the cab stuff will. if you are in need of some thing e-mail me as i just didn't what to see good stuff trashed that might help me or someone else. you also want to look at the auger bed under the rotor to make sure it not rusted out. good luck.

Much appreciated! It is a long shot but I may try to pick this one up. For one thing it is in a place where I dare leave it for a couple weeks while I get some work done. I know how to check the cab wiring on the IH. When I was looking at the 1460's the owner was changing out the cab solenoid...learned something there. I will keep you posted.

I owned a 1660 for 8 years and I worked on every piece of it except for transmission, engine, and final drives. The number of things to check are too numerous for me to type out but if you send me an email ([email protected]) I can give you my phone number and I'd be happy to discuss it over the phone if you'd like. Perhaps while you're there looking at it, I could walk you around it over the phone. Basically if I've learned anything about used combines, once you really dig into them fixing things, your repair bill doubles as you find broken or worn parts that you just can't see from the outside. As for the mice smell, replacing the interior will help. Fehrcab.com sells prefabricated interiors for agricultural equipment and they are very reasonably priced. In fact I bout an interior kit for my 1660 and installed it in a couple of hours
