I am looking to get into a combine for corn and small grains. I have narrowed down my choices to a Gleaner F3 (nearest dealer for parts 2.5 hours away, mid 80"s vintage) or a JD 4400 (mid 70"s vintage with several dealers within a 1.5 hour ride).

Pro"s and cons? thoughts? not a lot of acreage involved, just looking for something reliable and dependable. Old machines, I know.
 
F3 most are hydro drive, jd 4400 were all gear drive, both are good machines, parts are still available for both of them, a lot of aftermarket parts as well. Heads are easier to find for the jd. I liked the f3 better if in rocky ground, thresher door will open if a rock enters , the f3 will probably cost more if it is in excellent condition and it is easier to work on. Also f3 was available with a power fold unload auger, jd 4420 also has this option. If I was looking at jd I would like the 4420 better. The john deere is a little easier to switch heads on and off but you can master the f3 also. I am neutral on this, have had both brands, but best combine I ever owned was a f3.
 
I think the F3 is the better machine, especially if it has the hydrostatic drive. But both of those models can be reliable and do a good job of harvesting. At this point, the JD will probably be cheaper to buy with better heads.
 
A JD 6600 would be closer in size to a Gleaner F series. You can then get one with a hydrostatic drive on it. The JD 4400 is a nice smaller machine but the JD 6600 is a better machine. Also the JD 6600 will be about the same money as the JD 4400. Parts will be more common for the JD 6600 too as they shared many of the parts with the JD 6620/7700/7720. The JD 4400 did not share very many parts with the other models other than the JD 4420.
 
Might be a location thing, but the majority of the 4400's I have been around were hydrostats. also most of those were later models.
