Grain Combine (Massey Ferguson 550)

Hello

I have a MF 550 combine that is having hydraulic problems. It does not want to raise the header when it gets hot. It works fine for the first 30 to 45 mins. of running in the field. Although it does leak really slow down during the first rounds of a field but you can still bump the button up and it comes up. After about 45 mins it leaks down and when you go to raise it up, it will not.
Has anyone ever came across this problem before, anyone work on these and knows what is causing this :?: We nearly know it is not the pump because the hydraulics would not work at all and they do except for raising the header after it warms up but it will probably be the next step. We've replaced both magnetic cylinoids and in line filter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :!:

Thanks in advance for the Replys

i hate to bring bad news if i am right we had a problem similar to this in our 860 if the head tries to start coming up like less than an inch every time you pull the leaver or push the button. open the engine compartment and look at the pump pully at full revs when you activate the hydrolics does the pump pully slow down if it does you need a new dampener pully on the engine not a cheap item for the 860 it was about 1200 bucks give or take a hundred. it could also be the relief valve. the way you check that is to take off the spool valve and take it to a hydrolic repair shop with a test stand and they'll be able to tell you. that might run you about 300 bucks. i'm sorry but it sounds like your dampener pulley, on the plus side with that pully new your hydrolics will be so snappy you'll think it is a new machine.
good luck levi

forgot something if it is that pulley you have to pull it straight back with no side pressure it is a very tight fit. it could be really hard in the behind the radiator on the 550. my cousin was trying like heck to pry it of with a bar while i took off the screen and he finally gave up i got the sceen off and it nearly fell of in my hands

I had some similar problems with my 550. As I remember the unloading auger would not swing and the variable speed cylinder would not move properly. Exception - I think the header did raise. The problem was in the valve block. There is a presure relief valve with a spring behind it. A set screw had vibrated decreasing the pressure on the spring letting too much oil pass by. I believe I took off the valve and tighten the spring and "set" it with lock tight. The header may not be regulated by this bypass. After I tightened the bypass everything worked great.

make sure the belt is very tight otherwise it will slip, not hard to adjust, may not be the problem but is something I have seen on 510/550 combines

Thanks, did what you said and the pulley didn't slow at all on the pump, but appreciate the advice :!:

well were both glad for you then because that is not a cheap fix. but you still have your problemthe only other thing i can think of is in that spool valve beside the cab. that happened once on a 760 we got and it had a lot of the same symptoms you describe but so did the dampener, sometimes i hate hydraulics.

Think this is the spool valve your talking about.

the top valve is the one i'm talking about. and the minute i saw it it looks like the valve in our 860 not our 760. on the 760 it was a relief valve all in one assembly which is probably more costly. but this is more confusing to me anyway. when you repalced the poppets did any of them look melted or deformed which i've heard can cause problems like your having. If you don't have a good dealer with a very knowledgable service department I would recomend a hydrolic service outfit. those cesna valve bodies i think are pretty common. in western kansas we have kanamac hydraulics and thats who fixed it for me the Massey dealer couldn't test the valve to tell me the replacement valve was bout as good as the one it replaced. if there is a place that does hydrolic work around your area they are probably better than a dealer anyhow because they look at these kind of problems all the time. i hope you can get her fixed cause i bet your under a lot of presure right about now
good luck
Levi

Could you possibly have a cracked valve body? and when the body heats up the crack opens up? Seen that before not on a MF combine though, Also worn out spools in a valve or the bores they move in same as before, the heat causes the tolerances to change.... thats what it almost sounds like to me if it isn't something else. Vague I know but just an idea.

Now it wont work at all. steering is the only hydraulic that works. the oil is getting oven hot along with brand new pump, new poppets, new o rings in header control value and steering valve. Any updates or any help would be appreciated!
(quoted from post at 18:37:09 06/08/09) Hello
