jd 95-105 hydro drive

I'm currently looking at a 95 and 105, both are hydro drive. I noticed both have different types of hydro drives, is one better than the other.also I had someone tell me that the 105 will cut circles around a 95.I know the 105 is bigger but not that much.thanks for any advice

I don't think the hydro drive is gonna be the deal breaker between the two.

Either one was fully capable of rolling itself around the field.

And, to expound on that, WHAT do you see as the big difference between the Sundstrand hydros on either of those machines?

95 had the hydro pump mounted up at the motor and hydro motor bolted to the transmission. 105 had both the hydro pump and motor mounted by the transmission. 105 could be had with the 404 diesel. A big step up from the 303 diesel. Both machines were HP limited

The difference is just that.is one better than the other because of where the pump is mounted.I know mud would affect a 105 if it gets into the belt

That's gonna be a little tough to bolt that Dubuque style bellhousing up to a Waterloo style engine. It's gonna require a serious "a-dapt-a-kit" along with some welding rods and super glue.

As willo says, dont. the engines wont fit,and the 404 is too long to fit with out major(and probably expencive) modifications. fix the 303.Best (and cheapest for the 'long haul'.BTW,If you get one of them,I have a repair manual for the hydro on those combines that I would give you....Or anyone else that needs it

Well, they must have thought the belt-drive version was pretty SWELL 'cuz they used it all the way through the big 'ol 8820!

Thanks guys for the information, this helps alot.I didn't know the 404 won't fit,and I'm not good at adapting and you don't want to see my welding. So now I have some new questions if I were to change out the motor in the 95 its best to get a 329 or a 359.The owner of the 105 told me he took a motor out of an early 7700 and put in it,so will I need to get a motor out of an early 6600 or 4400 for the 95?

That's correct. The 4400 and early 6600 used the 329. The 4420 used the 359. Any of these should work. The 359 is a peppier engine and starts much better than the 329 in cool weather.

I had both. The 95 with a 3 row head and is a good combine. It was fairly easy to workon. The 105 is really 3 times the capacity of my 95. It had a gas engine and it used 10+ gallons per hour. Bought a 404 diesel off a 7700. It was easy to mount All holts lined up. The only problem was making a new mount for the radiator.
