JD 55 SP Carb.Access Idea

I finished combining my oats, but had to run the carburetor at about half-choke. It is time to remove the carb, clean it out, etc. but access to it is terrible. Gotta go over the muffler, and manifold and there is only a tiny bit of room between the engine and grain tank. I'm thinking of using my angle grinder with a metal cutting blade and making a cut horizontally just below a stiffener in the grain tank. Then cut a rectangular opening for carb. access. My idea is after that to put on a continuous hinge, some sheet metal over the hole, some duct tape, and I should be ready to go. Better ideas? kelly

I've thought of doing the same thing...My friend has a late squareback with an access panel. That was there from the factory!

My 68 squareback has the access panel in the grain tank too. Must of been quite the improvement. pain in the rear otherwise.

Thanks guys! Sounds like I have a project ahead of me, actually two: 1) make the access panel and 2) remove the carburetor, clean it, re-install it and get it running well. Thanks again! kelly

Our old 45 does not, but was thinking along the same lines a you guys. Just waiting for the day to have to do it.
