6 row corn head IH 1440?

I have been contemplating (actually waiting for a deal to come along) on an axel flow. Been thinking about a 1460 or a 1660. Would a 1440 run a six row head? Would it be a good fit for the machine? I often see 4 row heads on 1440s which is why I am wondering. My corn usually runs about 150 and I go up and down and around hills on much of my ground too....

Just wondering what you folks think.....

First axial flow I ever saw was a 1440 with a 6 row. That guy combined a lot of corn in its day.BTW,that machine was a 'First Run'. the owner even got the special 'commentive' belt buckle...

Go with the 1460 or 1660, they have a heavier transmission and front axel tube. A 6 row head is a lot of weight for a 1440 on hilly ground.

The 1440 has lighter final drives than a 1460, but the guts inside the machine are the same.

I"ve always heard you can put a grain extension or a six row head....but not both.

That said, there were several around here with both.....if you are careful, you should be fine.

You could ask my neighbor who raised the 6rn head and curled the drive axle up into the augers that move the grain back to the separator.......

All combines of all colors get stressed and overloaded by extended hoppers or big heads or rough ground, doesn't matter the color.

As this thread from a couple years ago says, the red ones there are a few places to check and preventative inspections for cracks or loose nuts that does happen, need to catch it in time.

I worked at IH/CNH sw Iowa dealers for 47 years & 1440 is a good light duty small grain combine, its not a hill or mud slogger, get a 1460/80/1660/80, they have more HP, heavier main tube front axle, final drives, transmission & hydros, engine, in fact 80 series all have a heavier rear axle/spindle than 60 size. 40/60 have same separator rotor/sieves, 80 is bigger rotor 30" (24" on 40/60) wider throat, sieves, elevator, rear axle.

Thanks for the advice. There is a 1440 coming up on auction locally that is suppose to be a good one but I think I will keep keeping an eye out for a 60.

A good friend ran a 1440 for years with a 6 row corn head..He pulled one final off and drove a beam in to strengthen the axle housing that breaks..He had a turbo,RWA,and a bin extension...He said it was one the best combines that he ever owned..
