Loosing some weight

Wasn't looking for one, but ran across a 3RN corn head for my combine at an auction. Figured it might be a good thing to have this spring - it's still so wet here that no one has started doing any field work. Might get me in the field a couple days earlier than carrying the 6-row. (STILL lots of last year's corn standing around here) Only had to out-bid a scrapper to get it, so not a lot invested ($300), and only 20 miles from home. Knew it needed one gathering chain. Found out when loading it that it also needs an idler and tensioner for another gathering chain. Still doing OK on price, and not much labor to fix.
Put it on the combine today, and pulled some tin off to work on it. Found out a gathering chain drive is bad. May just be a $20 bearing, but those things are a royal PITA to fix. Now I'm debating fixing it, or parting it out. May offer it whole on craigslist, but figure it's worth more as parts - I'd keep a bunch for my other heads, sell some, and the rest would probably go to China. Get most of my $$ back, anyway.
Thing looks like a toy, when you're used to a 6RN, or even a 4RW.

Cute.

That should help in softer conditions, compared to the 6 row. Trying not to fill the bin completely will help a little too. I'd weigh the extra time required and the additional compaction against the risk of waiting for better conditions. Saw several people harvesting corn 2 weeks ago before it started raining, still more to go though.

I think that is a 962. I paid $250 each for 4 stalk rolls last fall. And they were a little hard to find. Probably hard to connect with someone needing parts, but it"s worth more than scrap.

Yes, it is a 962. Too bad we're so far apart... I could sell you some parts off it if I go that route.

I noticed when I put the head on the combine that the tires stuck out past the head. Put a tape measure on it yesterday, and it's 118" wide at the tires. On 30" rows, I'd be trying to fit it in a 120" space. Would be OK if the combine had 18.4's, but it has 23.1's, and I'm not switching them. So that has decided it for me... I'm putting it on CL and/or ebay. If it sells, fine. If not, I have a cheap parts supply for my other heads. Maybe I'll stumble across a 4RN.
