Pulling a transmission on 550 massey

I have a 550 massey gear drive combine thats got a little to much metal in the oil in the transmission. I pulled a gear box on a 510 about 20 years ago and i cant remember how i did it.

I do remember that one wheel comes off so the axle shaft can be removed so the gear box can be removed.

Is it the left side wheel and final drive that needs to be pulled?

Please share Any thoughts or advise

I have done this on a massey 510....on a 510, BOTH wheels & final drives have to come off to get the driveshafts out of the transmission. then, you have to take the shifting linkage "cluster" off the trans to get it out of the frame of the combine. With a floor jack its not to bad out and back in with everything out of the way.....just takes time.

When I did it....it was on my 510 derby bine....so I cut the shaft going to the right wheel, then welded it back together....obviously, you don"t want to do that with a field machine.

Don"t even want to talk about changing that dang serpentine belt up at the top either....lol

Niether one needs pulled.Take rh brake apart & slide it onto thr driveshaft. then you can get it out of trans.Loosen bels and remove clutch.Don't forget to loosen shifter adj before the drive belts.Take mount off rh side should slide off of lh driveshaft.I think this is pretty close to procedure.Removed plenty of them when worked for MF right in field to take back to shop & overhaul.

lbsmjs.// you are the guy I need to talk with,,massey 300 diesel , needs tranny forks repaired ,, I do think it will be a tuf job ,,however if your method worx on 300 trannys please let me know , thanx jim

The 3sp gear transmission for the 300-550 are to my knowledge the same.

I too have never heard of sliding the brake over and pulling the transmission without pulling at least the left tire.

I know this sounds lame but I have rebuilt a Massey transmission before but I don't remember how I did it.
