Header trailers.

I must be missing something and maybe you all can fill me in. What makes a Header trailer worth so much money? I think what they are pricing them at is crazy.

Steel and rubber have both gone up quite a bit over the years, so I can see some of the prices.. some of these header trailers are over 45ft long. Here is my homemade one, cost was 0 I had everything laying around including the new tires on the left side.

Put your lower rail where you want it so the wagon front tires will clear when turning.

Pull your combine over it and lower the head till it makes contact when the shoes are setting in the saddles on the lower rail.

Then set the upper rail where it makes contact on the header skid plates for height and width.

Don't forget to set the height high enough to absorb all the flex in a floating cutter bar. The upper rail is better a little to high then to low.

No reason the bottom of the feeder house cannot start to open before your all the way down.

If you have a good neighbor that has one you could measure theirs. I like the single axle version myself. It's a lot easier to back in the shed

Ia Gary has it right. The upper rail should be high enough so the cutter bar touches it when the rear of the head is still three or four inches above the lower bar on perfectly flat ground. That way if the combine or header trailer are leaning back when it comes time to mount or dismount the header it will still work. Jim

That's why I ended up just making mine. It would have been no cash out of pocket , but I decided to put new bushings, bearings, and seals on the running gear. I lifted the head all the way up, put the safety stop on the cylinder, drug the running gear under it, and got to measuring. Dad and I had it together in a lazy weekend. Used it 2 years now, and Im tickled to death that I took the time to make it. Saved a bunch of cash, got some use out of a perfectly good Gehl running gear that was sitting in the way, and got to hang out with Dad.
