Went did it - bought M2

Been thinking a about a bigger combine. Got some acreage coming out of crp and renting some more ground, so figured I didn't want to run the E3 until Christmas. Missed a good F2 diesel longback first of the month, but found a good looking M2 about an hour & a half from home. Runs strong and everything works - except reel speed & lift, and owner (previous now) says that those items will be working before I move it. Comes w/318 head & 6-30 black corn head. Planting 8 rows, so would rather have 4rn head, but this'll be fine. 15' bean head would be easier to get around with on my hilly ground too, but I'll try the 18. It's a rice & soybean special - spike tooth cylinder, hydro, chopper, new cab interior, augers all look good. Glean grain & tailings need adjusting, raddle chain looks good, needs a few fingers in the head auger. PO says he's ran some corn through it & it didn't hurt it too badly. May need to change cyl at some point, but excited to try it out & see how it does. Hope the pics show up.

I was always told you could NOT run corn through a spike tooth cylinder. I would think you would just smash the cob up rather than shell off the corn.

Congratulations.

I don't have any experience with that, but I agree with JD in that I can't imagine running corn through a spike cylinder.

There are so many of those combines junked, it might pay to be looking for a good cyl./concave set to be putting in there.

I've read about guys running corn through a spike cyl - po says he did & it wasn't bad - but I too have always heard you can't. Figure I can find a rasp bar cyl at Sikeston & switch out if spike won't work. Meantime, I can shell corn w/the E3. I don't raise a whole lot anyway.

About shelling corn with a spike tooth cyl.
I had a piece of litature on the first John Deere 55 combines that had the spike tooth cyl.set up . It pictured two farmers that shelled some corn from there crib , They said there was no dockage at the elevator. My thoughts were , it was very dry and they opened the concaves all the way , plus slowed the cyl. down as much as possible. They fed the corn into the 55 with a elevator. clint

I used to have a Gleaner A2 that I ran corn thru with a spike cylinder. It worked fine. My neighbor runs corn thru a JD 95 with a spike cylinder with no trouble.
