IH 403/150 drill

A local guy as a 403 combine for sale, and I've got a few questions. I searched the archives and only found a bit on 403's. This is gonna be a working machine, are parts available? It only needs to get me through for a few years until I can get something newer. What are any weak points? I don't know if it is a hydro or not. Any major rust points? Grain tank and pan, augers is about what I know to check. And can a pickup reel
Be put on the existing head? He is asking $1000, pretty good for up here. He also has a 150 IH drill, don't know the price yet. What is the spacing on that drill? Specs? Are they a decent unit, gonna be used for barley, oats, and grass hay with an oat nurse crop.

Can't help you much on the combine other than guys that had them got along good with them. The 403 evolved into the 715, it's main competition in size would be JD 95, AC C2, Massey Super 92, Cockshutt/Oliver 431.

My book for IH drills shows the 150 hoe drill had a variety of opener spacings: 8", 10", 12" and 14". Years ago I had the double disc version, the No 100, very good drill. The 150 would work well for oats and barley, grass seed you might want the grass seed attachment. My 100 wouldn't close down enough to seed rape (5 lb/ac) so I mixed the seed and fertilizer and put it through the fertilizer attachment which worked well. The seed box held 1 3/4 bu per foot of box (wheat) on the 150. The fertilizer attachment had drop bottoms to clean out. Keeping all the fertilizer mechanism was very important as they'd rust up resulting in big damage. I always tarped mine when I wasn't using it.

403 is a good old combine, I used one for a long time. one place to look for rusted out things is the bottom of the grain bin on the right hand side behind the unloading auger drive. Also under the clean grain and return grain augers can rust out. Parts are around some of the sickle drive parts were getting high last I bought any but that has been a few years.

I own several 715s which share a quite a few parts with the 403. You might not be able to walk up to the local CaseIH parts counter and get what you need, but there are lots of parts out there in junkyards and fence rows. The 403 was a very popular machine.

As far as a pick up reel you should have little trouble finding one to fit your head.

The 403's were good old combines..As mentioned lots of 715
parts will work..If I had the shed room I would buy the one
near me thats for sale..

hanks for the replys, guys. Sounds like she might work for a while. I should be able to look at her day after tomorrow and I'll let you all know. Sounds like I missed out on the drill, oh well. In the pictures it looks like the cab on the combine is an old cat road grader cab, be interesting to see how good of a job they did on that.

Well, I own a 403. Needs new belts, and there is some rust in the elevators, but none in the tank or grain pan. Bars and concave looked good, and the engine turns free so I think I can get her running without much issue. Not cherry, but she will do long enough to see if my grain venture is profitable. Now I need a drill, pickup attachment, and a swather.
Josh.

(quoted from post at 15:15:27 02/06/14) Congrats on the purchase of your 403..Do you have any
pictures for us..
orry, no pics. I am leaving for another 5 weeks at work, so won't be picking her up or playing with her until I get back. I will post pics when I do get there. 5 weeks on 1 week off is just not enough time to play.

just a tip on the big flat drive belt if it needs
replaced get a multi vee b section belt. wrap a
tape measure around the pulleys and match a lenght
up then get one wide enough.
dont try and splice it will just drive you nuts
and keep pulling in two.
the multi vee will run straight and will have
enough traction to stall the engine . it does on a
503 anyway so i am sure it will on a 403.
all belts and bearings are starndard sizes and
very few on it anyway.
get a good belt pickup make the mounts to bolt it
on and drive it off the reel drive. you may have
to twist the belt .
the hydro is the same as 715 and I think newer
machines as well.

Another question I should have asked but forgot, this 403 is a "windrow special", what is the difference? Even with the parts book I cannot tell the differences, and the owners manual does not say anything.

I am guessing a windrow special is set up for small grains not so much corn?
I havnt read my operators manual in a while but a quick look in it on page 46 . there is a feeder beater ahead of the cylinder as well as a rock trap that is part of the windrow special. it appears that the cylinder could have different rasp bars it may have a straw spreader? take another look in your book looks like it was a option package and the machine may or may not have all the options?
not all the books are the same by the way I think I have 3 here and they dont all have the same info.
