Another Combine Question

Sorry for all the questions guys, but this Gleaner K is a totally new animal for me, never been around one. I was wondering, is the transmission, header, and the rest of the machine controlled by the reservoir on the back right side of the machine? The manual says to put transmission fluid in it, how much does it hold? I didn't know if there was any other places to change oil in or if that reservoir held the fluid for the entire machine.

well I finally found in the manual that the tranny has 90 wt oil in it but the main thing I was wondering is does the variable speed in any way run off the transmission fluid in the hydraulic pump reservoir? my neighbor said his deere would up and stop moving if the hydraulic fluid got a little low and I'm thinking that could be the problem with mine.

Sorry I have not gotten back to you. Emails slip away on me...

On my F series, there is a small hyd cylinder that pulls the middle variable pulley together. It sounds to me like you have a problem in that area, assuming the K is designed the same.

All the hydraulics run off of that hyd pump/ reservoir/ valve stack on the back right side.

90 wt in hubs and tranny ,,, always watch for wet seepage indicating leaks ,, atf fluid , jd 303 ect in hydro uniton bak rite rear , , that runs steerin variable speed , and lifts ,,,you can overhaul variable speed with a hardware stoor o -ring kit ,,, very simple

No matter the position of the hyd cyl paul talks about, the combine should still move if the belt is the proper tension. If the lower (driven) pulley is moving, the problem is between the pulley and the drive wheels. Could be a sheared key, broken out clutch hub, worn clutch plate, etc.

JMS & Paul, everything is turning ok, i'll just have to troubleshoot it when the weather warms up and snow melts!!

Also I noticed the corn head doesn't stay up very long when you cut the engine off, it even leaks down while driving it down the road, what needs to be fixed with this? a neighbors K has been parked since September and his head is still where he left it (raised)

Head not staying up could be wear in hyd header valve.....bad O-ring, etc. Lift cyl are one way- could be oil sliding past an internal seal in the cyl. Check for leakage on the cyl.

The 2 way cylinder on my Glencoe Soil Saver would leak down pretty fast since I got it last year. Took it to the repair shop, they called me back and said they never saw anything like it. The piston was cracked, nothing else was hurt or scored. They wondered where the broken off piece was, as it was not in the cylinder.

I had the same problem with the K I had several years ago. The main shaft out of the trans broke. Had to drop the tranny and had the dealer put a new shaft in. Wasn't too bad a job, but I was younger and more limber then. think it cost about $400 . Had one round of beans left. Had the neighbor get behind me with my loader tractor and he pushed on the axel so I could finish the field.

Do you guys know how many quarts of tranny fluid the reservoir at the back holds? I'm going to change it and the filter, does the machine have any other filters besides it and the oil filter??

I wonder if that is just progressive deterioration? One chip at a time, ending up in your sump/pump? After Army time, my first job during college was in a machine shop....learned how steel has a grain, but cast- like your piece...is porous. Just little blobs separated by air, and they machine differently. Machining cast is just like breaking off little blobs.

drain all the old fluid and change to new fluid, put some LUCAS TRANNSMISSION additive in your hydro ,, that will energize the seals ,,, do not overfill hydro ,,with the head all the way up 4 inches from top is too full,,
